Repentance reward guide

Room clear rewards

Getting nothing, seeing two pickups, or finding another locked chest can all have different explanations. Start with the event that produced the drop.

Identify the event first

Where did your reward come from?

Choose when the drop appeared and the mode you are playing. The same-looking pickup can come from different reward rules.

This is an ordinary room-clear award.

Clearing an eligible enemy room can produce a pickup, but getting nothing is a normal possible outcome.

  • Luck affects the award roll. Lucky Foot and Lucky Toe also have direct reward effects, so their benefit is not only their +1 luck stat.
  • Normal mode does not apply Hard mode's extra heart-award suppression.
  • Layout contents, enemy drops and chest contents are separate sources. A modifier may replace, duplicate or add a choice to the award rather than change every source.

This identifies reward systems and exceptions. It does not read your save, calculate combined drop odds or predict the next seeded reward.

An ordinary clear is one reward source

The last enemy does not promise a pickup.

An eligible enemy room can generate an award when it is cleared. Loose supplies, pocket consumables, chests and no award are possible outcomes. Existing layout contents and enemy-specific drops are separate from that completion event.

A reward may be absent

A room that pays nothing can be working normally. Check luck, mode and reward-changing effects before assuming a missing pickup is a bug.

A modifier changes a stage

Lucky Foot improves award chances. Guppy's Tail can replace an award. Humbleing Bundle can increase an eligible pickup's value. These are different checks.

Collection has its own rules

A paired pickup, a choice group and a chest do not grant the same permission. Read the pickup value, collection rule or opening cost before taking it.

Do not treat every award as an item pedestal. When a collectible is generated, its pool, unlocks and item-specific effects matter. Read the separate item-pool rules.

Similar symptoms, different rules

Luck is not a universal reward multiplier.

Ordinary awards

Luck affects ordinary room awards, but it is not a blanket percentage bonus to all drops. Lucky Foot and Lucky Toe also improve awards through direct effects. More luck does not guarantee a key when you need one or improve every item's quality.

Luck stat and effect-specific rules

Hard mode hearts

In Repentance, Hard mode removes one third of heart-type room-clear awards and replaces them with nothing. This is an extra rule for that award type, not a statement that every resource's drop chance is reduced by one third.

Check how a heart helps your character

Champion pickups

A champion's special pickup comes from killing that enemy. Hard mode makes those pickups less reliable. Greed mode suppresses most of them, with Golden Hollow and rare rainbow-champion exceptions. D7's respawned champions cannot drop their special pickups. None of these cases is the same check as the final ordinary award.

Chance, replacement, value and choices

These effects change different parts of the reward.

Read each effect separately. A replacement, a doubled pickup and a second option are different benefits. Their percentages describe their own checks, not a combined chance for your whole build.

Thirteen Repentance reward-changing items and trinkets, including scope and exceptions
Item or trinketWhat changesBefore relying on it
Lucky FootAward chanceAdds +1 luck and directly improves the chance of receiving a room-clear award. Its pill conversion and specific gambling-machine bonuses are separate effects. It does not turn every source into a guaranteed payout.
Lucky ToeAward chanceAdds +1 luck and improves room-clear award chances, with additional container and object effects. Its Locked Chest bonus and chances for extra pickups from Tinted Rocks or destroyed machines are separate from the ordinary clear roll.
Guppy's TailReplacementCan replace a clear award with a Chest or Locked Chest, or replace it with nothing.More chests can mean fewer loose keys and more locked rewards. Plan your key supply; an item inside is not guaranteed.
Safety CapReplacementAdds a 10% chance to replace a clear award with a pill, plus extra pill chances from specified containers and machines. It changes reward type, not pill identification or safety. Check your pill rules before using the result.
Ace of SpadesReplacementAdds a 10% chance to replace a clear award with a card, plus possible extra card/rune drops from specified sources. This is the Ace of Spades TRINKET. The consumable card with the same name converts pickups and enemies and uses a different effect.
Contract from BelowDuplicationDoubles eligible clear awards, with about a one-third chance to remove the reward instead. This is not a guarantee of two payouts every room. Trinkets and Greed wave pennies are excluded from its doubling effect.
Broken ModemDuplicationHas a 25% chance to double eligible room-clear pickups.Ordinary chests, pills and cards are excluded. Chests generated by Options? are a specific exception; do not apply a blanket rule to every drop.
Humbleing BundlePickup conversionEligible new pennies, bombs, keys and red hearts have a 50% chance to become their paired pickup variants in Repentance. It improves an eligible pickup's value when it appears. It does not create a clear award when the roll gives nothing.
Deep PocketsEmpty-award fallbackIf an eligible room would pay nothing, spawns 1–3 coins. Also raises the coin limit to 999.The fallback does not operate in Greed mode. It is not a bonus coin payout on every already-successful award.
Options?Clear-award choiceOffers two ordinary room-clear rewards, of which one can be taken.Choosing one normally removes the other. A Troll Bomb option is an exception and is not removed by collecting the other reward.
There's OptionsBoss-item choiceOffers a choice between two boss item rewards where its effect applies.Taking one removes the other. Mini-boss drops and Mom's special reward are excluded; it also supplies a choice after Boss Rush.
More OptionsTreasure-item choiceOffers two item pedestals in Treasure Rooms, with only one available to take. This is a Treasure Room effect. It does not provide a second loose pickup after every ordinary fight.
D7Another clearRespawns enemies in an eligible cleared room so another clear can award a pickup. No effect in Greed mode, Boss Rooms, Devil or Angel Rooms, or rooms with no enemies. Respawned champions do not drop their special pickups.

Very similar names

Three Options items, three reward sources.

Options?

Clear-award choice

Ordinary room-clear pickups. Collect one reward and the other normally disappears. A Troll Bomb option is an exception.

Effects and unlock

There's Options

Boss-item choice

Eligible boss item rewards, plus the reward after Boss Rush. Mini-boss drops and Mom's special reward are excluded.

Effects and unlock

More Options

Treasure-item choice

Treasure Room item pedestals. This changes the item offer, rather than the pickup awarded after an ordinary room clear.

Effects and unlock

An extra option lets you choose a better fit. It normally does not let you take two rewards. Contract from Below and Humbleing Bundle instead change quantity or pickup value, so do not read their paired drops as an Options choice.

Risk another fight

D7 offers another clear, not a free promised reward.

D7 restarts enemies in an eligible previously cleared room. Winning the new fight can produce another ordinary award. It does not guarantee a pickup, open chest contents for free or repeat a floor boss's pedestal reward.

  • It has no effect in Greed mode, Boss Rooms, Devil Rooms or Angel Rooms.
  • A room that had no enemies is not a free D7 reward source.
  • Respawned champions do not drop their special pickups.
  • Weigh the next fight against your health, build and remaining charges.
