Repentance deal guide

Devil and Angel deals

Devil deals can buy power with health. Angel Rooms can preserve it and help build the Mega Satan key. Understand what the offer changes before stepping through.

Choose the next step

What does my deal history mean?

Choose your history and goal. The helper explains the ordinary rule, then shows the usual effects of any selected items. It does not read your save or calculate your current percentage.

Deal-changing items to review

Select any that you hold. Their exceptions are listed separately from the ordinary rule.

Ordinary Repentance rule

Plan before the first doorway

Most characters get a Devil Room as their first ordinary offer. Bethany's starting Book of Virtues changes that rule.

For this goal: Leave the first Devil doorway unentered if you want the skip guarantee. Looking inside spends that opportunity.

Two parts of the opportunity

Will a room appear, and which kind will it be?

An eligible boss clear

Ordinary deal doors begin around Basement II and end with Chapter 4. XL floors and special access have exceptions. A holy item does not create ordinary doors on every late-game floor.

The chance of any deal

Qualifying red-heart damage reduces the room chance. Recent deal appearances and other effects also matter. Soul or Black Hearts buffer ordinary hits against the red-damage penalty.

The kind of room

Deal history and selection modifiers determine Devil versus Angel. Preserving Angel eligibility is useful even when the chance of a doorway is still below 100%.

Illustrative Found HUD values

Devil20%
Angel10%

Read each number as its room's chance.

In this made-up example, the displayed chances add to a 30% chance of a deal doorway, leaving 70% for no deal. The 10% Angel value is already the Angel doorway chance, rather than a second multiplier you apply to the Devil value.

Enable and understand Found HUD

Deliberate payments have their own rules: Blood Donation Machine, Devil Beggar and Sacrifice Room damage do not apply the ordinary red-damage penalty. Enemy hits still do. Check health and damage exceptions.

The first ordinary offer

Skipping and declining are different choices.

1

Leave the first door unentered

Next ordinary offer: Angel

Skipping the first offered Devil Room completely guarantees that the next ordinary deal offer is an Angel Room. It does not promise an offer on the very next floor.

2

Enter, then decline the deals

Angel eligibility stays open

Looking inside spends the skip guarantee. If you take no counted deal, later ordinary offers can still be Devil or Angel.

3

Take a counted Devil Deal

Ordinary Angel access closes

A purchase normally commits the run to Devil deals. Special items can change that restriction; declining a later purchase does not reset it.

What counts as taking a deal?

Taking a priced Devil item normally counts. A Lost free deal also counts. Merely collecting loose hearts, opening a Red Chest, or taking Krampus's drop does not. Credit Card or Coupon can make an item free without counting as a purchase; inspect which items actually became free.

Satanic Bible can make the boss reward a Devil Deal outside the Devil Room. Buying that reward still affects Angel eligibility. Read its floor effect.

These choices describe ordinary offers. Early teleports, character starts, Sacrifice Rooms and deal-changing items can alter the sequence. A doorway may disappear after leaving; decide before assuming you can return.

Inspect before buying

The price depends on the character and the offer.

Common Repentance deal-price rules and character exceptions
Character / healthUsual price ruleWhat to check
Normal red-health characters
Usually one or two red containers; inspect the priceThe cost can remove maximum capacity, including an empty container. Healing afterward does not rebuild a sold container.
Characters without red containers
A displayed Soul / Black Heart priceRead the actual symbol and quantity. Some deals can use a different or mixed health price; do not assume your current red filling sets the cost.
??? / Blue Baby
One or two Soul Hearts for ordinary dealsHis Repentance price matches the item's usual red-container count. That special discount does not apply to every soul-only character.
Keeper / Tainted Keeper
Normally 15¢ or 30¢ for Devil itemsKeeper pays coins for Devil deals. Tainted Keeper also pays for Angel items and most other pedestals; quest items and certain fixed drops are exceptions.
The Lost / Tainted Lost
One health-priced deal for freeTaking it removes the other health-priced options in that room. A Lost free deal still counts against ordinary Angel access.

A health-priced purchase can be lethal. Holy Mantle does not pay the price for you. Curse of the Blind hides the reward, while Curse of the Unknown hides health. For The Forgotten, Jacob and Esau, or temporary ghost forms, check the current character and form before spending.

An Angel Room usually offers one free choice.

Taking one item normally removes the other items in its choice group. Compare the options before collecting; Tainted Keeper still pays coins for Angel items.

The rule changers

A guaranteed room and Angel eligibility are different effects.

Goat Head

Guarantees a Devil or Angel doorway after an eligible boss, regardless of damage, and keeps it open.

It guarantees a room, not Angel selection. It does not reopen ordinary Angel access after a counted Devil Deal or create doors on ineligible floors.

Eucharist

Guarantees Angel Rooms after eligible bosses and keeps their doors open.

It can bypass the normal deal-history restriction. Picking it up after visiting this floor's Devil Room does not replace that already visited room.

Duality

When a deal room generates, normally offers both Devil and Angel entrances. Entering one removes the other option.

It also works after a Devil Deal was taken. It does not itself guarantee a room roll; limited boss-room space can prevent a second entrance.

Act of Contrition

Allows Angel Rooms after counted Devil Deals and softens the deal-chance penalty from red-heart damage.

Angel eligibility is restored, but an Angel doorway is not guaranteed. Check the actual HUD chances.

Book of Virtues

Makes the first ordinary deal an Angel Room and permits Angel Rooms even after a counted Devil Deal.

It also biases later selection toward Angels. Eligibility and a first-offer rule do not guarantee a deal room on every floor.

Black Candle improves the chance of a room appearing. Key Pieces bias an eligible offer toward Angels. Neither should be treated as a guarantee just because an item is holy or says “evil up.”

Turn an Angel visit into a route resource

Build the key for Mega Satan.

After completing the Chest or Dark Room once, ordinary Angel statues can be bombed to begin angel fights. Collect both Key Pieces to open the golden door in the starting room of either Chapter 6 floor.

  1. 1.Save a bomb and health

The item choice and statue fight are separate decisions. Take a useful free item, then judge whether your build can handle the optional fight.

  2. 2.Win the angel fights

Uriel and Gabriel supply the two Key Pieces. Keep both pieces if you are using the normal key route.

  3. 3.Reach Chapter 6

The completed key does not supply the Polaroid or Negative route by itself. Prepare the floor path as well as the door-opening resource.

Plan the full Mega Satan route

Other access has its own rules.

Greed / Greedier

The final optional wave guarantees a deal room on eligible floors. These modes use their Greed deal pools and do not lead to Mega Satan.

Sacrifice Rooms

Spike rewards can provide Angel access or angel fights even when ordinary Angel doors are restricted. Count the payments and plan for the later hazards.

The Stairway / Angel Shop

This is a coin-priced shop reached through a starting-room ladder. Treat it as separate access, rather than a free ordinary Angel offer.
