Compare taking an item with making a locust, and check linked choices and room triggers before using Abyss.
Understand the system
Charged Abyss consumes room pedestals and creates persistent red locust familiars. You give up the normal collectible effect. Some absorbed items have special locust behavior, so inspect the particular item.
A linked set offers alternatives, such as a take-one Angel Room selection. Abyss consumes one choice and removes the other linked options. It does not turn every alternative into a locust.
Absorption counts as taking the item for room triggers. Using Abyss on a Boss Rush choice starts the fight. In combat, your locusts charge in the firing direction rather than acting as normal tear projectiles.

Practice the decision
These are fixed teaching examples with stated conditions. Choose an action and compare what you have before and after it.
Tainted Apollyon
Before
Abyss charged; one free unlinked pedestal; below the familiar cap
After
Pedestal consumed; one persistent locust added
The original item effect is not acquired. Its pedestal instead becomes a locust, which may have item-specific behavior.
Check before acting: Compare the actual item effect with the value of another locust first.
