Learn how to find or craft fishing gear, gather bait, catch fish, use traps, prepare your catch safely, and cook food so you can survive without relying on risky loot runs.
Fishing Overview
Fishing is one of the most reliable food sources in DayZ once you understand the basic setup.
Get a Rod
Find a fishing rod near boats, sheds, and coastal towns, or craft a simple fishing rod with a long stick and rope.
Add Hook & Bait
Attach a hook to your rod, then add worms as bait. Bait makes rod fishing and fish traps much more reliable.
Prepare & Cook
After catching fish, prepare it with a knife and cook it before eating. Wash your hands or wear gloves to avoid sickness.
Fishing Gear & Recipes
If you cannot find fishing gear, most of what you need can be crafted from basic survival items.

Fish Net TrapWhere to Find Gear
Fishing rods, metal hooks, and jigs can be found around boats, sheds, coastal towns, and sometimes infected near those areas.
Bone vs Wooden Hooks
Wooden hooks are useful in emergencies, but bone or metal hooks are usually better when you have access to them.
Bait Efficiency
Use a knife to dig worms in an emergency, but a shovel, pickaxe, or hoe is usually more efficient and can give more worms per dig.
Using a Fishing Rod
Once your rod has a baited hook, fish from the edge of fresh or salt water and wait for the tug.
Rivers, ponds, and lakes can catch freshwater fish like carp.
Coastal/ocean fishing can catch saltwater fish like mackerel.
- Craft or find a fishing rod.
- Attach a hook to the rod.
- Dig up worms and combine one with the hook.
- Stand near a pond, river, lake, or ocean shoreline.
- Hold the action button to fish.
- Release when you see the tug or splash.
- Each catch consumes bait, so bring extra worms.
Best Fishing Times
Some players recommend fishing during early morning and evening windows for better results.
These windows are commonly considered good times to fish. Catch rates can still depend on server settings, bait, hook condition, and where you are fishing.
Using Fishing Traps
Traps are useful when you plan to stay near an area, return later, or passively gather food while doing other tasks.
Small Fish Trap
Made from a plastic bottle and knife. Deploy it in water, attach bait, leave the area, and check back later.
Freshwater can produce smaller fish like bitterlings, while saltwater can produce smaller fish like sardines.
Fish Net Trap
Made from netting and metal wire. It usually gives better results than a bottle trap and can catch larger fish.
Freshwater can produce carp, while saltwater can produce mackerel.
Use Bait
Traps work much better with bait. Attach worms, then leave the area and return after enough time has passed.
Place in Deeper Water
Fishing traps need water deep enough for the placement prompt. If the water is too shallow, the trap may not deploy.
Check Back Later
Fish traps are passive. Give them time, then return and check the catch. Reset the trap if it did not catch anything.
Wait Time: around 15–25 minutes is a common check window.
Bait: worms are strongly recommended for better results.
Durability: traps and hooks degrade with use and cannot be used once ruined.
After You Catch Fish
Catching fish is only half the job. Prepare it safely, cook it, and avoid getting sick from bloody hands.
Prepare with a Knife
Use a knife to gut and prepare fish before cooking. Prepared fillets are easier to cook and manage in your inventory.
Avoid Bloody Hands
Preparing fish or animals can leave your hands bloody. Wear gloves or wash your hands before eating or drinking to avoid sickness.
Cook Before Eating
Cook fish over a fire, stove, oven, or cooking setup before eating. Cooked fish is one of the most reliable survival foods in DayZ.
Cooking Safety Tip
Use existing indoor fireplaces or stoves when available, but be careful placing simple campfires inside buildings because they often cannot be lit unless the location supports indoor fires.
Firewood lasts longer than sticks, and a hand drill kit made from bark and a short stick can light a fire if you do not have matches or a lighter.
Hook & Trap Durability
Hooks and traps wear down as you use them, so bring backups when you plan to fish for a while.
Bone hooks usually have fewer uses than standard fishing hooks.
Standard hooks usually last longer, depending on condition.
Wooden hooks are useful in emergencies but are generally weaker.
Ruined hooks and traps cannot be used.
