Rods, hooks, traps, bait, cooking

DayZ Fishing Guide

Build a complete fishing setup, compare rods and hooks, catch the correct fish in each water type, use passive traps, prepare the catch safely, and turn basic coastal materials into a dependable food supply.

Core rule

Complete gear catches food faster

The 1.27 fishing rebalance made incomplete and improvised tackle slower and less effective. Use the best rod, hook, lure, and bait combination available.

Why fishing is worth learning

Fishing converts common materials into repeatable calories. The setup is quiet compared with gunfire and works near many spawn routes, inland ponds, and the coast.

Fishing priority

Complete the setup

A rod needs a compatible hook or lure. Baited standard gear performs better than improvised or incomplete combinations.

Fishing priority

Carry a cutting tool

A knife helps craft hooks, gather bark, dig worms, prepare fish, and build the fire needed to cook the catch.

Fishing priority

Match the water

Fresh water, normal salt water, and Sakhal salt water produce different catches. The trap type also changes the result.

Fishing priority

Protect your hands

Preparing fish can leave bloody hands. Wear gloves or wash before eating and drinking to reduce food-borne illness risk.

Fishing priority

Plan the cooking step

A successful catch is not ready until it is prepared and cooked. Carry kindling, fuel, and a reliable ignition option.

Fishing priority

Stay aware

Fishing and cooking keep you occupied near predictable water sources. Watch the shoreline and avoid standing exposed.

Fishing loadout

Build the kit in three layers

Start with anything that works, then replace improvised parts as better gear appears. A blade and a cooking plan are part of the fishing kit, not optional extras.

Layer 1

Rod and tackle

Use a found Fishing Rod when possible. A Simple Fishing Rod is the dependable crafted fallback.

Layer 2

Bait and tools

Earthworms complete normal hooks. A cutting tool supports every stage from crafting through food preparation.

Layer 3

Food safety and fire

Clean hands and a working fire turn the catch into safe food. Do not begin fishing without a plan for the final step.

Rod comparison

Found gear is stronger, improvised gear keeps you alive

The found Fishing Rod is compact and durable. The Simple Fishing Rod is easy to make but occupies a shoulder slot and performs worse with improvised tackle.

Found equipment

Fishing Rod

The extendable Fishing Rod appears around boathouses, docks, and rowboats. It is smaller in inventory, has higher durability, and accepts normal baited hooks or a Jig.

Crafted equipment

Simple Fishing Rod

Combine a Long Stick with Rope. The rod is available almost anywhere, but it is less durable, cannot collapse into normal inventory, and counts as a long shoulder item.

Incomplete tackle has a real penalty

The official 1.27 rebalance made fishing take longer and perform worse with incomplete fishing tools. The crafted rod and improvised hooks still work, but upgrading the setup saves time and exposure.

Crafting route

Make almost everything from survival materials

A knife, clothing, sticks, bones, bottles, wire, and netting can produce the full improvised fishing system.

Crafting recipe

Simple Fishing Rod

The improvised rod is easy to build, but it is larger and less durable than the found Fishing Rod.

Crafting recipe

Rope from Rags

Combine two full stacks of six Rags. This turns spare clothing into the core material for an improvised rod.

Crafting recipe

Bone Fishing Hook

Bones provide a practical improvised hook after preparing an animal. Several sharp tools can perform the crafting action.

Crafting recipe

Wooden Fishing Hook

The easiest emergency hook is also the least effective and least durable. Replace it when a better hook appears.

Crafting recipe

Small Fish Trap

The bottle trap catches Bitterlings in fresh water, Sardines in normal salt water, and Shrimp on Sakhal.

Crafting recipe

Fish Net Trap

The larger trap targets Carp, Mackerel, Pollock, or Steelhead Trout depending on the water and map.

Worm gathering

Use the best digging tool available

Knives and bayonets can dig an Earthworm in an emergency. Shovels, Field Shovels, Farming Hoes, and Pickaxes are better choices when collecting several worms for a longer session or baiting traps.

No bait shortcut

Keep a Jig when you find one

A Jig attaches directly to the rod and attracts fish without an Earthworm. It removes the digging step and makes a compact fishing kit easier to maintain.

Rod fishing

How to catch fish step by step

The controls differ by platform, but the sequence is the same. Complete the tackle, start the action, watch the water, and respond to the bite cue.

01

Choose a rod

Use a found Fishing Rod for compact, durable gear or craft a Simple Fishing Rod from a Long Stick and Rope.

02

Attach a hook or Jig

A Fishing Hook, Bone Fishing Hook, Wooden Fishing Hook, or Jig can complete the tackle setup.

03

Add an Earthworm when required

Hooks need bait. The Jig is the exception because it works as a reusable lure without an Earthworm.

04

Move to compatible water

Use freshwater ponds and lakes or saltwater coastline. Stand close enough for the fishing action to appear.

05

Watch for the bite cue

Begin fishing, then react to the tug or splash cue instead of ending the action too early.

06

Collect and inspect the result

The catch may appear at your feet or in the nearby vicinity. Fish are common, but rods can also pull up junk.

Before casting

Fast equipment check

  • Rod is not Ruined and has a compatible tackle attachment.
  • The hook has an Earthworm, or a Jig is attached instead.
  • A knife or other cutting tool is available for preparation.
  • Gloves are worn or clean water is available for hand washing.
  • Kindling, fuel, and ignition are ready for cooking.
  • The shoreline has been checked for players and infected.

Positioning

Do not become the easy catch

Fishing produces no gunshot, but the player remains predictable and occupied. Avoid open docks on busy servers, use reeds or terrain behind you, and stop occasionally to listen.

A Fishing Rod can pull up junk such as Wellies or a Cooking Pot. Check the nearby ground before assuming the attempt produced nothing.

Catch table

Water type decides what you can catch

Rod fishing targets larger fish. Small Fish Traps target small species, while Fish Net Traps target the larger species for that water type.

Community servers can change the table

These are vanilla catches. Community servers can modify wildlife, timing, item durability, and catch probabilities through server configuration or mods.

Timing

Fish during the stronger bite windows

Fishing works throughout the day, but vanilla catch chances improve during two in-game time windows.

In-game server time

05:00 to 09:00

Morning bite window

18:00 to 22:00

Evening bite window

Approximate advantage

Roughly 30 to 50 percent higher fish chance

The current fishing reference records a substantial catch boost during these windows. The time is the server's in-game clock, not your local real-world time.

  • Use the stronger window when food is urgent or tackle condition is low.
  • A complete rod and tackle setup still matters outside the time bonus.
  • A Jig saves bait collection time, but it does not remove equipment condition.
  • Community servers can alter time speed and fishing settings.
Passive fishing

Use traps while you complete other survival tasks

Fishing traps trade immediate control for time. Bait the trap, deploy it in deep-enough water, move away, and return after the trigger window.

Small catch

Small Fish Trap

Cut a Plastic Bottle into a trap. It catches Bitterlings in fresh water, Sardines in normal salt water, or Shrimp on Sakhal.

Larger catch

Fish Net Trap

Combine Netting with Metal Wire. It targets the same larger fish as rod fishing for the selected water and map.

Trap ruleVanilla valuePractical meaning
Without bait15 percent catch chancePossible, but too unreliable for urgent food
With Earthworm85 percent catch chanceBait the trap whenever possible
Trigger time15 to 25 minutesSet it before looting, cooking, or organizing gear
Required distanceAt least 25 meters awayDo not wait directly beside the trap
ConditionDegrades through useReplace a Ruined trap and avoid abandoning valuable Netting

Remember where the trap is

Place the trap near a memorable landmark and avoid highly visible shorelines. Other players can find it, and a trap left behind can eventually despawn.

Food safety

Prepare, clean, and cook the catch

Fishing solves hunger only when the catch reaches your stomach safely. Keep a blade, protect your hands, and build the fire before your condition becomes critical.

Step 1

Prepare larger fish

Use a knife or another compatible sharp tool to prepare Carp, Mackerel, Pollock, and Steelhead Trout into fillets. Small species such as Bitterlings and Shrimp are cooked whole.

Step 2

Keep hands clean

Wear gloves before preparing the catch. Without gloves, wash bloody hands at a safe water source or with clean water from a container before eating or drinking.

Step 3

Cook before eating

Bake, boil, or use another valid cooking method. Cooking is the dependable beginner choice even when a specific fish can technically be consumed raw.

Fire kit

Build the cooking plan before casting

Bark or paper provides kindling, Short Sticks or Firewood provide fuel, and Matches, a Lighter, a Flare, or a Hand Drill Kit provide ignition. An existing indoor fireplace is safer than an exposed campfire.

Cookware

Carry food, water, and cooking capacity

A Cooking Pot or Frying Pan increases cooking capacity. The pot also stores items and carries water, making it especially valuable for a fishing-focused survival route.

Food safety is part of the health system

Bloody hands, raw food, unsafe water, and low immunity can compound into a serious survival problem. Use the Health Guide for symptoms, prevention, and treatment.

Practical setups

Use the loadout that matches the run

A fresh spawn, a mobile survivor, a trap camp, and a cold-map traveler need different fishing equipment.

Fresh-spawn setup

Craft from what the coast gives you

Build a Simple Fishing Rod, craft a Bone or Wooden Fishing Hook, dig Earthworms, and use a knife to prepare the catch.

Mobile survivor

Compact and ready anywhere

Carry the collapsible Fishing Rod, a Jig, a cutting tool, and a Cooking Pot. This setup minimizes bait dependence and supports long inland travel.

Trap camp

Collect food while doing other work

Deploy a baited Small Fish Trap or Fish Net Trap, move away to loot or prepare camp, then return after the trigger window.

Sakhal setup

Food and warmth in one stop

Fish for Pollock or Steelhead Trout, keep a fire kit dry, and cook immediately so the same stop restores calories and body heat.

Avoid wasted runs

Common fishing mistakes

Most fishing failures come from an incomplete setup, unsafe positioning, incorrect water assumptions, or forgetting the cooking step.

Fishing with an incomplete setup

A rod without a compatible hook, lure, or required bait wastes time. Check the rod attachments before starting.

Using the wrong water assumption

Fresh water and salt water have different catch tables. Sakhal also has unique saltwater fish and shrimp.

Ignoring the Jig

The Jig does not need an Earthworm, making it valuable when you cannot dig bait or need a compact backup.

Standing in the open

Fishing locks your attention on the water. Use shoreline cover, scan before casting, and move after repeated attempts.

Forgetting spare bait

Earthworms and hook condition are limited resources. Bring extras before relying on fishing for a long trip.

Eating with bloody hands

Preparing a fish without gloves can contaminate your hands. Wash them before consuming food or water.

Eating the catch raw

Some fish may technically be consumable raw, but cooking is the safe beginner rule and gives a more dependable meal.

Leaving traps nearby

Fishing traps need distance and time. Staying too close can prevent the trap cycle from completing.

Assuming every hook is equal

The metal Fishing Hook is more reliable than improvised choices. The Wooden Fishing Hook is the weakest emergency option.

Cooking beside a visible window

Firelight and smoke can reveal your position. Use an existing fireplace, stay away from windows, and leave after cooking.
