Repair fundamentals

Six rules prevent most equipment losses

The item category gives you a strong first guess, but repair limits and special exceptions matter just as much as carrying the right kit.

Match the material

Repair tools follow the item type. Cloth, leather, metal, rubber, electronics, weapons, and vehicle parts use different systems.

Repair before ruined

Damaged and Badly Damaged items can usually be restored. Once an item reaches Ruined, standard repair actions no longer work.

Expect Worn condition

Most wearable, handheld, and weapon repairs restore an item to Worn rather than Pristine. Vehicle engine repair is a separate exception.

Protect critical gear first

Footwear, armor, magazines, suppressors, NBC pieces, and vehicle components are more urgent than low-value clothing or spare tools.

Use alternate kits wisely

Some items accept more than one repair tool. Save scarce Epoxy Putty, Duct Tape, and vehicle supplies when a common option works.

Check item-specific exceptions

Metal historical armor, bottle suppressors, firearm furniture, radiators, and spark plugs do not follow the broad category rules.

Worn is a successful standard repair

Pristine items are untouched. Once most equipment has been used, repairing it restores dependable Worn condition rather than its original Pristine state. Save the remaining kit when no further repair prompt appears.

DayZ sewing kit item icon

Sewing Kit

Cloth and soft gear

The default maintenance tool for most cloth clothing, soft headwear, regular backpacks, burlap equipment, Rags, and tents.

Common targets

  • Shirts, jackets, pants, gloves, and soft hats
  • Most cloth backpacks and burlap bags
  • Car Tents, Large Tents, and Medium Tents

Remember: NBC clothing and Drybag Backpacks may also accept it, but check the exact item before spending a use.

DayZ leather sewing kit item icon

Leather Sewing Kit

Footwear, leather, and vests

A high-value kit for shoes, boots, leather clothing, holsters, sheaths, pouches, leather bags, and many vest types.

Common targets

  • Civilian and military footwear
  • Leather clothing, Fur Backpacks, and leather bags
  • Plate Carriers, Stab Vests, holsters, and pouches

Remember: Many ballistic vests also accept Epoxy Putty, so use the kit that best matches your remaining supplies.

DayZ Duct Tape repair and crafting item image

Duct Tape

Versatile emergency repair

Duct Tape overlaps with many cloth, NBC, waterproof, and selected utility repairs, making it useful when the specialized kit is missing.

Common targets

  • Many normal clothing and soft equipment items
  • NBC pieces, gas masks, Drybags, and Drysacks
  • Selected utility items such as Metal Wire

Remember: It is not universal. Weapons, hard helmets, footwear, batteries, wheels, and engines need other repair tools.

DayZ epoxy putty item icon

Epoxy Putty

Hard surfaces and armor

Epoxy Putty repairs many modern hard helmets, ballistic protection, the Crossbow, Protective Cases, and removable vehicle body parts.

Common targets

  • Assault, Ballistic, Combat, and Tactical Helmets
  • Plate Carrier, Ballistic Vest, and Stab Vest
  • Crossbow and many vehicle doors, hoods, and trunks

Remember: Metal medieval equipment can use different tools. Great Helms and Norse Helms use a Blowtorch, while Chainmail uses Pliers or a Blowtorch.

DayZ sharpening stone item icon

Sharpening Stone

Blades and hand tools

Sharpening Stones maintain knives, axes, saws, bayonets, machetes, sickles, screwdrivers, crowbars, and several farming tools.

Common targets

  • Combat, Hunting, Kitchen, and Improvised Knives
  • Hatchets, axes, Hand Saws, and Hacksaws
  • Bayonets, Machetes, Screwdrivers, Crowbars, and Farming Hoes

Remember: Not every blunt melee item is repairable. Wait for the repair prompt instead of assuming the whole melee category accepts the stone.

DayZ gun cleaning kit item icon

Gun Cleaning Kit

Firearm maintenance

The Gun Cleaning Kit repairs compatible firearms, magazines, and proper suppressors that have not reached Ruined condition.

Common targets

  • Pistols, rifles, shotguns, SMGs, and marksman weapons
  • Detachable magazines and drum magazines
  • Pistol, Standardized, and Normalized Suppressors

Remember: It does not repair Plastic Bottle Suppressors, buttstocks, or handguards.

DayZ electrical repair kit item icon

Electrical Repair Kit

Optics, power, and electronics

Electronic Repair Kits cover electrical devices, powered optics, communication equipment, batteries, and several construction utilities.

Common targets

  • Weapon sights, binoculars, Night Vision Goggles, and lights
  • Radios, transceivers, megaphones, and battery chargers
  • Car batteries, truck batteries, generators, wire, and cable reels

Remember: Radiators and spark plugs are not repaired with this kit. Replace those vehicle parts.

DayZ tire repair kit item icon

Tire Repair Kit

Rubber and waterproof gear

Tire Repair Kits repair vehicle wheels and many rubberized or sealed survival items, including NBC equipment and waterproof storage.

Common targets

  • Repairable car and truck wheels
  • NBC clothing, respirators, and gas masks
  • Drybag Backpacks, Drysacks, and waterproof bags

Remember: Some NBC and waterproof items also accept Sewing Kits or Duct Tape. Use the least scarce valid option.

DayZ blowtorch item icon

Blowtorch

Engines and metal equipment

A Blowtorch with an attached gas canister repairs vehicle engines, many body panels, metal cookware, barrels, and selected industrial equipment.

Common targets

  • Vehicle engines, fuel tanks, doors, hoods, trunks, bumpers, and fenders
  • Cooking Pots, Frying Pans, Cauldrons, and Oil Barrels
  • Great Helms, Norse Helms, generators, and construction lights

Remember: The Blowtorch cannot repair radiators, spark plugs, windows, or every vehicle health component.

DayZ Pliers item image

Pliers

Chainmail maintenance

Pliers are a repair exception for Chainmail, Chainmail Leggings, and the Chainmail Coif, in addition to their crafting and base-building uses.

Common targets

  • Chainmail torso armor
  • Chainmail Leggings
  • Chainmail Coif and related armored hood equipment

Remember: Do not treat Pliers as a general armor repair kit. Their repair role is focused on chainmail equipment.

Clothing and storage

Soft gear, footwear, leather, and waterproof equipment

Normal cloth gear follows a simple Sewing Kit rule, while footwear, leather, NBC equipment, and waterproof bags introduce the most common overlaps.

Protection and armor

Hard helmets, ballistic vests, Crossbows, and metal exceptions

Epoxy Putty handles most modern hard protective equipment, but metal historical gear follows its own repair rules.

Item groupRepair withExamplesImportant note
Modern hard helmetsEpoxy PuttyAssault, Ballistic, Combat, Tactical, Firefighter, Motorbike, and similar helmets.Repair before the item reaches Ruined condition.
Ballistic body armorLeather Sewing Kit or Epoxy PuttyPlate Carrier, Ballistic Vest, and Stab Vest.Repair options overlap, so preserve the rarer kit when possible.

Chainmail equipmentPliers or BlowtorchChainmail, Chainmail Leggings, Chainmail Coif, and related armored hood equipment.Repair before the item reaches Ruined condition.

Helmet material matters more than the slot

A Ballistic Helmet uses Epoxy Putty, but the metal Great Helm uses a Blowtorch. Use the item-specific prompt whenever a helmet does not accept the expected repair kit.

Weapons and tools

Maintain the full weapon system, not only the gun

Firearm condition, magazine condition, suppressor condition, and the state of your melee tools all affect whether a loadout remains dependable.

Gun Cleaning Kit limits

Furniture and bottle suppressors are different

A Gun Cleaning Kit maintains the firearm, detachable magazine, and proper suppressor. It does not repair buttstocks, handguards, or the disposable Plastic Bottle Suppressor.

Sharpening Stone limits

Repair prompts are item-specific

The stone works on many cutting and utility tools, but not every melee weapon. Confirm the repair prompt before spending inventory space on a tool you cannot maintain.

Powered equipment

Electronics, optics, batteries, lights, and construction utility

The Electronic Repair Kit maintains much more than radios. It also supports combat optics, vehicle batteries, lighting, and electrical base equipment.

Item groupRepair withExamplesImportant note

Power and constructionElectronic Repair KitCar Battery, Truck Battery, Battery Charger, Power Generator, Construction Light, Cable Reel, Metal Wire, and Barbed Wire. Some metal powered equipment can also accept Blowtorch repair.
Contaminated-zone equipment

NBC and waterproof repairs overlap by item

Rubberized survival gear commonly uses a Tire Repair Kit, but many pieces also accept a Sewing Kit or Duct Tape. Check every slot before entering gas.

Item groupRepair withExamplesImportant note
NBC jacket, pants, hood, and glovesTire Repair Kit, Sewing Kit, or Duct TapeThe main rubberized NBC clothing pieces.Check the exact item prompt because supported alternatives can differ.

Waterproof storageTire Repair Kit with item-specific alternativesDrybag Backpack, Drysack, and similar sealed bags.Repair before the item reaches Ruined condition.

Inspect the full outfit, not one repaired piece

Contaminated-zone protection depends on a complete setup. Repair the jacket, pants, hood, gloves, boots, and breathing equipment, then replace any Ruined part before entering.

Vehicle maintenance

Wheels, batteries, engines, body parts, and replacement-only components

Vehicles combine several repair systems. Bring the correct tools before attempting a recovery instead of assuming one kit can restore the whole vehicle.

Radiator and spark plugReplacement onlyCarry spares because these components cannot be repaired with the normal kits. The Blowtorch does not repair a radiator, and the Electronic Repair Kit does not repair a spark plug.

Blowtorch exception

Vehicle engines use their own repair ceiling

Most repaired equipment stops at Worn. A vehicle engine follows a different interaction and can be repaired farther with a fueled Blowtorch.

Replacement parts

Radiators and spark plugs are not repaired

Keep spares during a serious vehicle project. A leaking radiator or failed spark plug creates a replacement problem, not a repair kit problem.

Step by step

How to repair an item safely

The interaction is simple, but good positioning and resource management keep the repair from creating a new problem.

01

Inspect the item

Confirm the condition state and identify whether the item is cloth, leather, hard armor, a weapon, an electronic device, rubberized gear, or a vehicle component.

02

Choose a compatible repair item

Place the repair tool in your hands, then combine it with the damaged item. The repair prompt appears only when the pairing is valid.

03

Repair from safety

Repair actions leave you occupied. Move indoors or behind cover, especially when fixing armor, weapons, magazines, or NBC equipment.

04

Recheck condition and charges

A completed action consumes repair-tool durability or gas. Confirm the target improved before spending another use.

05

Stop at Worn

Most normal items cannot be improved beyond Worn. Save the remaining kit for another Damaged or Badly Damaged item.

06

Replace ruined exceptions

Ruined items, radiators, spark plugs, bottle suppressors, and other nonrepairable parts must be replaced instead of repaired.

Keep armor equipped when the interface allows it

Hold the compatible repair tool and combine it with equipped armor instead of removing protection in an exposed location. Move to cover first because the repair animation still occupies your character.

Repair priorities

Prepare the equipment your next objective depends on

A repair kit is valuable only when it protects the next stage of the run. Prioritize around combat, travel, contaminated zones, or vehicle recovery.

Before combat

  • Repair the firearm and magazine before relying on them.
  • Maintain proper suppressors before they reach Ruined.
  • Fix ballistic armor and helmets while a compatible kit is available.
  • Check boots so a long retreat does not become a foot-care problem.

Before a contaminated zone

  • Inspect every NBC clothing slot and the respirator or gas mask.
  • Repair rubberized pieces with a compatible Tire Repair Kit, Sewing Kit, or Duct Tape option.
  • Carry a replacement filter and battery where the equipment requires one.
  • Do not enter with a Ruined protective piece.

Before vehicle recovery

  • Bring a fueled Blowtorch for the engine and metal body parts.
  • Use a Tire Repair Kit on repairable wheels.
  • Use an Electronic Repair Kit on car and truck batteries.
  • Replace damaged radiators and spark plugs instead of trying to repair them.

Before a long survival trip

  • Repair footwear, warm clothing, and the backpack first.
  • Maintain the knife, axe, saw, or farming tool that supports the route.
  • Carry one versatile repair option without destroying your stamina budget.
  • Leave low-value duplicates behind when the kit is more useful than the item.
Avoid wasted supplies

Common repair mistakes

Most repair failures come from waiting too long, carrying the wrong tool, or assuming a broad category rule has no exceptions.

Waiting until Ruined

Ruined items cannot be recovered through the normal repair system. Repair valuable gear while it is Damaged or Badly Damaged.

Treating Duct Tape as universal

Duct Tape covers many cloth, NBC, waterproof, and utility items, but it does not repair every item in DayZ.

Assuming every helmet uses Epoxy Putty

Most modern hard helmets do, but the Great Helm and Norse Helm use a Blowtorch, while Chainmail pieces use Pliers or a Blowtorch.

Ignoring magazines and suppressors

A clean firearm is not the whole system. Damaged magazines and proper suppressors also need Gun Cleaning Kit maintenance.

Trying to repair firearm furniture

The Gun Cleaning Kit does not repair buttstocks or handguards. Replace damaged furniture when the item does not accept a repair action.

Trying to save a bottle suppressor

The Plastic Bottle Suppressor is disposable and cannot be repaired with a Gun Cleaning Kit.

Forgetting Blowtorch fuel

A Blowtorch needs an attached gas canister. Carry enough gas for the repair instead of hauling an unusable tool.

Trying to repair radiators and spark plugs

These vehicle parts must be replaced. Save the Blowtorch and Electronic Repair Kit for components they can actually fix.

Removing Ruined clothing too early

Once Ruined clothing is removed, it cannot be equipped again. Make sure a replacement is ready before taking it off.

Expecting Pristine after every repair

Most normal repairs stop at Worn. Do not waste repair-tool durability trying to reach Pristine when no further action is available.

Frequently asked questions

Quick DayZ repair answers

Use these answers when you need a fast repair decision without scanning the full category tables.

Can ruined items be repaired in DayZ?

No. Standard repair actions work on Damaged and Badly Damaged items, but Ruined items must normally be replaced.

Why does a repaired item stop at Worn?

Worn is the normal repair ceiling for most clothing, equipment, weapons, magazines, and tools. Standard repairs do not restore those items to Pristine.

What repairs guns, magazines, and suppressors?

Use a Gun Cleaning Kit on compatible firearms, magazines, and proper weapon suppressors. It does not repair the Plastic Bottle Suppressor, buttstocks, or handguards.

What repairs a Plate Carrier in DayZ?

A Plate Carrier can be repaired with a Leather Sewing Kit or Epoxy Putty while it remains above Ruined condition.

What repairs NBC gear in DayZ?

NBC clothing and masks use item-specific combinations of Tire Repair Kits, Sewing Kits, and Duct Tape. Boots and masks rely mainly on Tire Repair Kits or Duct Tape.

What repairs vehicle parts in DayZ?

Tire Repair Kits fix repairable wheels, Electronic Repair Kits fix car and truck batteries, and a fueled Blowtorch repairs engines and many metal body parts. Epoxy Putty also repairs many removable body parts. Radiators and spark plugs must be replaced.
