New adventurer path

Your first steps in Gielinor

A practical OSRS beginner guide from Tutorial Island to a capable early-game account. Choose a free-to-play or members route, learn the systems that matter, and build goals without turning the game into a rigid checklist.

10,000 GP

Stronghold reward

A useful first cash stack after securing your account.

43 Prayer

Protection prayers

A major combat and questing milestone for members and F2P.

45-55 Magic

Travel and utility

Unlock major teleports, then High Level Alchemy at 55.

50 Quest Points

Early foundation

A flexible target that opens regions, systems, and equipment.

Start here

Set up the account before chasing levels

A few security and interface choices prevent expensive mistakes and make every later activity easier to learn.

Secure your account

Use a Jagex Account, enable two-step authentication, secure the connected email, and store backup codes somewhere safe.

Launch RuneLite safely

Open RuneLite through the Jagex Launcher. Avoid unofficial download pages, copied ads, and links sent by strangers.

Turn on safety settings

Enable PK Skull Prevention, Escape to close interfaces, Shift-click dropping, and sensible player and NPC attack options.

Learn right-click early

Many objects and NPCs have several actions. Right-clicking is one of the most important habits a new player can learn.

Wilderness rule

Do not carry anything into the Wilderness that you are unwilling to lose. Death and item-protection rules can vary by situation, so PK Skull Prevention is a safeguard, not a reason to bring valuables.

How OSRS progression works

A thousand small goals, not one mandatory route

The early game is not an obstacle before the real game. Every quest, level, teleport, and untradeable unlock becomes part of the permanent account you are building.

Quest before long grinds

Early quest rewards can replace hours of slow level-one training and often unlock the next useful activity at the same time.

Travel is account power

Magic teleports, jewelry, canoes, spirit trees, fairy rings, and diary teleports make every later goal faster.

Progress beats raw cash

A method that gives experience, unlocks, supplies, and some GP is usually more useful than an activity that only produces coins.

Mix active and relaxed play

Alternate quests and bosses with fishing, woodcutting, crabs, birdhouses, farming, or other lower-attention activities.

Choose your route

Free-to-play and members need different first goals

The F2P route teaches the core game with a smaller map and economy. The members route uses quests and transportation unlocks to open the wider account quickly.

Free-to-play route

A calm path from Lumbridge to Dragon Slayer I

Use this as a progression order, not a speedrun. You can stop for clues, gathering, combat, or exploration whenever you find something you enjoy.

01

Finish Tutorial Island without grinding

Use the tutorial to learn the interface, banking, gathering, cooking, and combat. Leave once you understand the actions instead of training there for extra levels.

  • Choose a standard account unless you intentionally want Ironman restrictions
  • Practice left-clicking, right-clicking, banking, and changing combat styles
  • Keep the starter supplies you receive for Lumbridge
02

Learn Lumbridge and establish food

Lumbridge is your safe practice area. Learn the castle bank, general store, nearby fishing spots, and the route toward Draynor and Varrock.

  • Cook shrimp, meat, or other low-level food
  • Train a few early combat levels on chickens, cows, goblins, or frogs
  • Bury some bones so Prayer begins progressing naturally

Cows are useful because their meat, bones, and hides teach combat, food, Prayer, and starter money at the same time.

03

Complete simple starter quests

Begin with short quests around Lumbridge, Draynor, Varrock, and Falador. Their rewards teach the map and skip weak early training methods.

  • Cook’s Assistant and Sheep Shearer for simple questing practice
  • The Restless Ghost for early Prayer experience
  • X Marks the Spot, Doric’s Quest, Rune Mysteries, and Imp Catcher
  • The Knight’s Sword when you are ready for a large Smithing boost
04

Secure the Stronghold of Security reward

Bring food, move carefully through Barbarian Village’s dungeon, and answer the account-security questions to claim its one-time coin rewards and boots.

  • Enable two-step authentication before going
  • Bring enough food and leave if enemies are hitting too hard
  • Bank the coins instead of immediately spending the entire reward

The Stronghold is not a race. New accounts can return later with more Hitpoints and better food.

05

Reach Varrock and the Grand Exchange

The Grand Exchange becomes the practical hub for a standard account. Use it to sell loot and buy small quantities of food, runes, tools, and basic equipment.

  • Buy only what supports your next goal
  • Keep coins in the bank when you do not need them
  • Pick up a Chronicle and teleport cards for a cheap return route toward Varrock
06

Build all three combat styles

Melee is the easiest place to start, but Ranged and Magic solve different encounters. Train each style enough to understand its equipment and resource costs.

  • Use scimitars for fast general melee training
  • Train Magic toward Fire Strike and early city teleports
  • Use bows and arrows to learn safe ranged positioning
  • Work toward roughly 20 Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, and Magic
07

Choose a F2P capstone goal

Once the basics feel comfortable, use a larger objective to pull the account together. Dragon Slayer I is the classic F2P destination.

  • Build quest points and prepare food, armor, and teleports
  • Train Mining, Smithing, Fishing, Cooking, and Crafting as needed
  • Try clues, Ogress Warriors, or relaxed Stronghold training between quests

Membership is most valuable when you already enjoy the game and want more quests, skills, regions, transportation, and bosses.

Members route

Turn quests and travel into permanent account upgrades

Members progression accelerates when you open systems instead of grinding isolated levels. Prioritize quests, transportation, Prayer, and useful untradeables.

01

Unlock core quest systems

Members should immediately begin using quests to open skills, regions, and better training methods.

  • Complete Druidic Ritual so you can train Herblore
  • Complete Rune Mysteries for early Runecraft progression and related unlocks
  • Complete Children of the Sun to access Varlamore
  • Begin Priest in Peril when you are ready to open Morytania
02

Use quests to skip weak combat levels

Waterfall Quest is the standout early melee reward, but it passes dangerous areas. Follow a guide, bring food, and do not carry valuables you do not need.

  • Complete Waterfall Quest for a major Attack and Strength jump
  • Use Witch’s House for Hitpoints experience when appropriate
  • Progress through Tree Gnome Village and The Grand Tree
  • Mix quests with crabs or other relaxed training when you want a break
03

Build your transportation network

Walking everywhere is one of the fastest ways to make early OSRS feel slow. Treat travel unlocks as permanent account upgrades.

  • Raise Magic for Varrock, Lumbridge, Falador, Camelot, and Ardougne teleports
  • Use teleport jewelry and tablets when the time saved is worth the cost
  • Unlock spirit trees through Tree Gnome Village and gliders through The Grand Tree
  • Complete the Ardougne Easy Diary for the monastery teleport
04

Unlock fairy rings

Fairy rings connect remote regions and become one of the most useful transportation systems on a members account.

  • Complete The Restless Ghost and Priest in Peril
  • Complete Nature Spirit, Lost City, and Fairytale I
  • Start Fairytale II and progress until the Fairy Godfather grants access
  • Carry a dramen or lunar staff until the diary upgrade removes that need
05

Reach the first major combat milestones

Prayer and Magic often improve a new account more than buying expensive armor. They unlock protection, movement, and utility across the game.

  • Reach 43 Prayer for all three protection prayers
  • Reach 45 Magic for a strong group of early teleports
  • Push toward 55 Magic for High Level Alchemy
  • Complete Animal Magnetism before serious Ranged training
06

Establish recurring progress

Short repeatable activities can quietly build experience, supplies, and money while you pursue quests or combat goals.

  • Complete Bone Voyage and begin birdhouse runs on Fossil Island
  • Start herb and tree runs once Farming feels comfortable
  • Unlock Tears of Guthix for weekly experience in your lowest skill
  • Try Hunter Rumours, Farming contracts, or Sailing when their requirements fit your account
07

Work toward your first lasting equipment

The strongest early upgrades are often earned rather than purchased. They remain useful because they represent account progress, not only bank value.

  • Complete Monkey Madness I and reach 60 Attack for the Dragon scimitar
  • Enter the Warriors’ Guild at 130 combined Attack and Strength to pursue defenders
  • Progress Recipe for Disaster toward Barrows gloves
  • Work toward Fighter torso and Helm of Neitiznot when you want longer projects
08

Learn your first bosses

Start with encounters that teach movement, prayer, supplies, and the combat triangle before jumping into difficult money-making bosses.

  • Try Scurrius when your combat stats and protection prayers feel ready
  • Use Barrows as an introduction to repeated PvM and gear rewards
  • Move toward Perilous Moons after building a broader mid-game foundation
  • Treat the Fire Cape as a major confidence goal, not an immediate requirement

Transportation roadmap

The best early upgrade is often a faster way back

Travel unlocks compound. Every future quest, farm run, clue, Slayer task, and boss attempt becomes easier when the account can move efficiently.

Chronicle

Immediate

A cheap early teleport near the Champions’ Guild and Varrock area.

Magic teleports

Early

City teleports become available as Magic rises and remain useful forever.

Canoes

Early F2P

A Woodcutting-based route along the River Lum between key Misthalin locations.

Spirit trees and gliders

Early members

Unlocked through the gnome quest lines and useful throughout questing.

Ardougne cloak 1

Early members

Unlimited monastery teleports near an altar, spirit tree, and fairy ring.

Fairy rings

Major unlock

A broad network that reaches remote regions after partial Fairytale II progress.

Combat basics

Train the account, not only one weapon

Melee, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer solve different problems. Early gear matters, but levels, protection prayers, and correct attack styles usually matter more.

Attack

Improves melee accuracy and unlocks higher-tier weapons.

Strength

Raises melee maximum damage and usually improves training speed.

Defence

Reduces enemy accuracy and unlocks stronger armor.

Ranged

Improves ranged accuracy, damage, ammunition, and equipment access.

Magic

Unlocks combat spells, teleports, enchanting, alchemy, and utility.

Prayer

Provides combat boosts and protection while Prayer points remain available.

Check the attack style

Melee weapons can use stab, slash, or crush. Match the selected style to the weapon’s strongest bonus and confirm whether the style is training Attack, Strength, Defence, or shared experience.

Protection prayers change combat

Protect from Magic, Missiles, and Melee unlock at 37, 40, and 43 Prayer. They can nullify or reduce matching damage depending on the encounter, making 43 Prayer a major account milestone.

Recurring progress

Set up useful activities, then do them when convenient

These activities are efficient because they require little active time or provide clear task-based direction. Missing a cycle is not a failure.

Hunter

Birdhouse runs

A brief Fossil Island activity that provides Hunter experience and bird nests after the traps have filled.

Farming

Herb and tree runs

Plant, leave, and return later. Farming delivers useful experience and can support a standard account’s cash flow.

Weekly

Tears of Guthix

A weekly reward that places experience into your lowest eligible skill and scales with quest progress.

Varlamore

Hunter Rumours

Task-based Hunter progression from the Hunter Guild, beginning with novice rumours at level 46 Hunter.

Members skill

Sailing

Build and operate a boat, explore the expanded ocean, and use Sailing as a change of pace from land-based progression.

Regional goals

Achievement Diaries

Structured task lists that encourage balanced skills and reward permanent regional conveniences.

Goal pacing

Keep one nearby goal and one ambitious goal

Short goals create momentum. Longer goals connect many systems and give the account direction without requiring you to complete everything in one sitting.

Beginner mistakes

Avoid problems that create work without progress

Most early setbacks come from spending too much, travelling inefficiently, ignoring safety, or forcing a grind that a quest could have skipped.

Grinding slow level-one methods before checking quest rewards
Spending the entire bank on one weapon or armor upgrade
Ignoring transportation and walking every journey
Entering the Wilderness with valuables or without PK Skull Prevention
Treating every daily or hourly activity as mandatory
Following an efficient route so strictly that the game stops being enjoyable
Training only melee and neglecting Ranged, Magic, and Prayer
Downloading clients or plugins from unofficial sources

Leaving the early game

You are ready for mid-game progression when the map feels open

There is no universal line, but a strong account usually has broad quest progress, useful transportation, protection prayers, several combat styles, recurring activities, and a path toward lasting untradeables such as the Dragon defender and Barrows gloves.

Continue your journey

Use focused guides once you choose the next goal

The beginner guide gives the account direction. These pages go deeper once you know which system you want to progress next.

Official resources

Use guides as tools, not rules

The OSRS Wiki and official account-security resources are normal parts of learning the game. Use as much assistance as makes the experience enjoyable.
