Watchtower
A Watchtower is a large buildable base structure in DayZ used for height advantage, scouting, storage-area defense, and base layout control. It starts from a deployed Watchtower Kit and can be built upward with multiple levels, walls, stairs, roofs, and optional defenses like Camo Nets and Barbed Wire.
Quick item summary
Quick answer
The Watchtower is one of the main advanced base-building structures in DayZ. It can be expanded into multiple floors, fitted with wall panels, stairs, roofs, Camo Nets, and defensive attachments. It is useful for watching approaches, defending a base, creating elevated angles, or adding structure to a larger compound.
In-game description
“Extendable watchtower. Can contain multiple floors to provide height advantage.”
Main Uses
- Create an elevated defensive position
- Scout surrounding terrain from above
- Strengthen a larger base compound
- Control sightlines around gates, fences, and storage areas
- Build multiple floors for height advantage
- Attach Camo Nets to wall sections for concealment
- Attach Barbed Wire to lower sections for defense
- Use wood or sheet metal paneling depending on available materials
How to use this item
Start a Watchtower
A Watchtower begins with a deployed Watchtower Kit. Once the kit is placed, you can attach the required materials and begin construction.
- Craft or obtain a Watchtower Kit.
- Deploy the Watchtower Kit on valid ground.
- Attach Wooden Logs to start the base.
- Use the proper tools to construct the base sections.
- Continue adding materials for walls, stairs, roofs, and upper levels.
Build the base and levels
Each level requires a base before the next level can be built. Watchtower levels are built upward in stages.
- Build the first base from the deployed Watchtower Kit.
- Add the required Wooden Logs for the level base.
- Build stairs if you want easy access to higher sections.
- Build roofs/floors to continue upward.
- Repeat the process for higher levels.
Add wall panels
Watchtower walls can be fitted with wood or metal paneling. Metal paneling costs more advanced materials but is stronger.
- Choose the wall side you want to build.
- Add Wooden Planks and Nails for wood paneling.
- Use Sheet Metal and Nails for metal paneling.
- Build upper and lower panels as needed.
- Repeat for each side of the tower you want protected.
Attach Camo Nets
Each wall section can have an attachment slot for a Camo Net, helping the Watchtower blend into the environment.
View related itemAdd Barbed Wire
Level 1 walls can be fitted with Barbed Wire for extra defense. Barbed Wire must be mounted using Pliers.
- Attach Barbed Wire to a valid lower wall section.
- Use Pliers to mount it.
- Be careful around your own wire because it can injure players.
Dismantle or destroy parts
Some tools can dismantle Watchtower parts, while heavier tools can destroy parts without returning resources.
- Use a Hatchet to dismantle supported Watchtower parts.
- Use tools like a Firefighter Axe, Hatchet, Sledgehammer, or Splitting Axe to destroy parts when needed.
- Only dismantle or destroy parts when you are sure, because resources may be lost.
How to get Watchtower
- Build it from a deployed Watchtower Kit.
- Craft the Watchtower Kit from Rope and 4 Short Sticks.
- Gather Wooden Logs, Wooden Planks, Nails, and tools for the base construction.
- Use Sheet Metal if you want metal paneling.
- Use Camo Nets and Barbed Wire for concealment and defense.
Spawn info
- • Watchtowers must be built by players.
- • A deployed Watchtower Kit is required to start construction.
- • The wiki lists the Watchtower as common because it is a craftable/base-building structure rather than a normal loot spawn.
Important notes
- A Watchtower starts from a deployed Watchtower Kit.
- Watchtowers can be built up to multiple levels for height advantage.
- Each level needs its base and roof/floor progression before higher levels are useful.
- Stairs are not always required to construct the next level, but higher sections may be inaccessible without them.
- Each level has three wall sides.
- Wall sections can use wood or metal paneling.
- Wood paneling uses Wooden Planks and Nails.
- Metal paneling uses Sheet Metal and Nails.
- Camo Nets can be attached to Watchtower wall sections.
- Level 1 walls can have Barbed Wire mounted with Pliers.
- Tools can perform multiple actions depending on where you aim on the Watchtower.
- If a base section is deconstructed incorrectly, materials stored inside may be lost.
- Watchtowers are large and visible, so placement matters for both defense and concealment.
