Valheim Boss Order

This is the main boss progression path. You can explore out of order, but each boss usually unlocks something important for the next major biome.

Universal Boss Prep Checklist

No matter which boss you are fighting, these habits make every fight safer and every corpse run easier.

Always Be Rested

The rested buff helps stamina regeneration, healing, travel, and overall survivability. Do not start boss fights without it.

Eat Real Food

Boss fights are not the time for weak filler food. Use your best health, stamina, eitr, or balanced meals for the tier you are in.

Bring the Right Mead

Poison resistance, frost resistance, fire resistance, healing, stamina, and eitr meads can completely change a fight.

Prepare the Arena

Flatten ground, remove hazards, build cover, place a portal nearby, and clear surrounding enemies before summoning.

Repair Everything

Repair your weapon, shield, armor, bow, and tools before the fight. Long fights can punish low durability.

Plan for Death

Keep backup food, older gear, and a portal route ready. Corpse recovery is much easier when you plan before dying.

Every Major Boss Guide

Each boss card covers the summon item, progression unlock, basic gear, attacks, fight strategy, and prep tips.

Boss 1MeadowsBeginner

Eikthyr

Eikthyr is Valheim’s first major boss and works as a tutorial for boss mechanics. The fight introduces telegraphed attacks, magic damage, boss trophies, Forsaken Powers, and progression unlocks.

Summon

2 Deer Trophies

Unlock

Hard Antlers → Antler Pickaxe

Recommended Gear

  • Leather armor
  • Wooden shield or tower shield
  • Flint spear, axe, club, or crude bow
  • Fire arrows or flint arrows if fighting at range
  • Cooked deer meat, cooked boar meat, honey, or other early foods

Attacks to Watch

  • Melee antler swing when close
  • Frontal lightning attack
  • Area lightning stomp

Prep Tips

  • Claim a bed before the fight.
  • Repair weapons and armor before summoning.
  • Eat three foods before starting.
  • Fight during the day and while rested.

Fight Strategy

Block or dodge the lightning attacks, punish after each animation, and keep stamina available. If melee feels risky, stay at range with a crude bow and arrows.

Boss 2Black ForestEarly Game

The Elder

The Elder is the Black Forest boss and the gate into the Swamp. The fight is mostly about patience, stamina management, and using the arena pillars correctly.

Summon

Ancient Seeds

Unlock

Swamp Key

Recommended Gear

  • Finewood Bow
  • Fire arrows
  • Bronze sword, bronze spear, or other upgraded melee weapon
  • Troll armor or bronze armor
  • Carrot soup, deer stew, minced meat sauce, or other strong early foods

Attacks to Watch

  • Summoned roots
  • Close-range stomp
  • Dangerous ranged vine attack

Prep Tips

  • Bring extra arrows.
  • Bring wood and materials for a workbench if you want a repair spot nearby.
  • Clear nearby enemies before summoning.
  • Keep a portal nearby but outside the direct fight area.

Fight Strategy

Use the four arena pillars to block vine attacks. Move away from summoned roots instead of fighting inside them, then attack with fire arrows or melee when safe.

Boss 3SwampMajor Difficulty Spike

Bonemass

Bonemass is one of Valheim’s biggest early walls. The fight punishes players who ignore poison resistance, blunt damage, terrain prep, and add control.

Summon

10 Withered Bones

Unlock

Wishbone

Recommended Gear

  • Poison Resistance Mead
  • Iron Mace or best available blunt weapon
  • Iron armor or upgraded Swamp-ready armor
  • Shield or buckler
  • Sausages, turnip stew, carrot soup, black soup, or other strong foods

Attacks to Watch

  • Melee swipe
  • Poison cloud
  • Blob and skeleton summon

Prep Tips

  • Use the hoe to flatten the arena.
  • Bring poison resistance and keep it active.
  • Bring a portal nearby for recovery.
  • Clear nearby spawners and enemies before summoning.

Fight Strategy

Use blunt damage, avoid standing in the poison cloud, clear summoned mobs quickly, and attack after his melee swings. Level or raise the ground around the skull before the fight so you are not stuck fighting in deep water.

Boss 4MountainsMid Game

Moder

Moder is Valheim’s dragon boss and the first major flying boss. The fight alternates between ranged pressure while she is airborne and melee openings when she lands.

Summon

3 Dragon Eggs

Unlock

Dragon Tears → Artisan Table

Recommended Gear

  • Frost resistance from Wolf Cape or Frost Resistance Mead
  • Silver sword or strong Mountain-tier melee weapon
  • Draugr Fang or strong bow
  • Obsidian arrows, poison arrows, or strong available arrows
  • Silver shield or strong shield
  • Strong health and stamina foods

Attacks to Watch

  • Airborne frost barrage
  • Claw slash
  • Bite
  • Frost breath

Prep Tips

  • Prepare the mountain arena before summoning.
  • Bring frost resistance even if you think your cape is enough.
  • Watch for wolves, drakes, or stone golems nearby.
  • Bring a portal, but place it somewhere safe from splash damage.

Fight Strategy

Use raised earth or terrain for cover while she is flying, break leftover ice crystals so you do not get stuck, and deal heavier damage when she lands. Bow-only is safer, but melee speeds up the fight if you are comfortable blocking or dodging.

Boss 5PlainsLate Game

Yagluth

Yagluth is one of Valheim’s most dramatic fights. He uses meteors, fire breath, and ground fire attacks while giving players only short windows to safely deal damage.

Summon

Fuling Totems

Unlock

Torn Spirits → Wisplight

Recommended Gear

  • Padded armor
  • Barley Wine / fire resistance
  • Silver sword, Frostner, Porcupine, or strong Plains-tier weapon
  • Strong Plains food
  • Healing meads and stamina support

Attacks to Watch

  • Meteor strike
  • Ground slam / fire nova
  • Fire breath beam

Prep Tips

  • Bring fire resistance.
  • Clear nearby fulings, lox, and deathsquitos.
  • Use the arena stones as cover.
  • Keep stamina available for retreating from meteors.

Fight Strategy

Use the arena pillars to block meteors, strafe away from fire breath, and punish after his ground slam. Stay disciplined and avoid getting greedy while the ground is burning.

Boss 6MistlandsEndgame

The Queen

The Queen is fought inside her own dungeon, the Infested Citadel. The vertical arena, mist, seeker adds, brood summons, and heavy melee pressure make this one of Valheim’s most complex fights.

Summon

Sealbreaker / Infested Citadel

Unlock

Mistlands endgame progression

Recommended Gear

  • Wisplight
  • Feather Cape
  • Poison Resistance Mead
  • Ooze bombs or Demolisher for adds
  • Krom or strong Mistlands melee weapon
  • Mage setup with Staff of Protection, Staff of Embers, Staff of Frost, and Dead Raiser
  • Eitr foods, stamina food, healing meads, and lingering stamina/eitr support

Attacks to Watch

  • Slash attacks
  • Lunging bite
  • Ground stab
  • Rushing slash
  • Projectile gunk that spawns brood
  • Burrow and reposition
  • Seeker summon roar

Prep Tips

  • Build a small rest and repair setup inside the citadel entrance area.
  • Keep protection bubble active if using magic.
  • Bring AoE tools for brood and seekers.
  • Use the arena exit if the fight gets out of control.

Fight Strategy

Keep your distance when needed, clear adds quickly, and use the arena exit to rest, heal, and repair. Magic is one of the safer approaches because Staff of Protection and ranged staves give more room for mistakes.

Boss 7AshlandsCurrent Endgame

Fader

Fader is one of Valheim’s toughest current bosses. The fight demands strong armor, strong food, meads, patience, and careful movement around fissures, meteors, fire breath, and summoned enemies.

Summon

Ashlands boss altar

Unlock

Ashlands endgame rewards

Recommended Gear

  • High armor or Ashlands-tier armor
  • Two health foods and one stamina food for melee
  • Two eitr foods and one stamina food for magic
  • Lightning axes, lightning ripper, or strong Ashlands weapons
  • Staff of the Wild, Staff of Embers, and Staff of Protection for magic
  • Healing meads, stamina/eitr support, and fire protection

Attacks to Watch

  • Lunging bite
  • Left and right claw attacks
  • Spin attack
  • Fire breath
  • Meteor summon
  • Fire wall
  • Fissure spikes
  • Green charred summon around the middle of the fight

Prep Tips

  • Do not get greedy during damage windows.
  • Keep stamina available for fissures and meteors.
  • Use healing meads proactively.
  • Expect the fight to become more chaotic around the halfway point.

Fight Strategy

Circle the boss, walk when possible to conserve stamina, avoid fissures and meteors, and only commit to damage when you have a safe window. Magic is safer if you keep Staff of Protection active and place roots away from active flames.

Common Boss Mistakes

Starting a boss fight at night.

Fighting without the rested buff.

Using weak food because you want to save your good meals.

Forgetting resistance meads for poison, frost, or fire-heavy fights.

Placing a portal too close to the boss arena.

Ignoring adds during Bonemass, The Queen, or Fader.

Standing in poison clouds, fire ground effects, or fissure zones.

Trying to rush damage instead of waiting for safe attack windows.

Not clearing nearby biome enemies before summoning.

Bringing too few arrows, meads, or repair options.
