How to read the values

Build an outfit around the situation

The highest protection number is not automatically the best choice. A practical outfit balances body coverage, climate, weight, mobility, availability, and the work you expect to do.

Protection Is Per Layer

The database lists the source values for one item. Your worn outfit can combine several layers, while holes and condition can reduce the protection you actually receive.

Heat Can End a Fight

High insulation and wind resistance help in cold weather, but heavy layered outfits can make a survivor overheat and tire faster in warm conditions.

Mobility Has a Cost

Run-speed, combat-speed, vision, hearing, discomfort, and weight modifiers matter when an outfit is built from several restrictive pieces.

Coverage Matters

A strong piece only protects the body areas it covers. Use the equip slot and blood-location tags to understand where an item contributes.

Outfit planning workflow

Use the database in four passes

01

Choose the threat

Sort by bite and scratch defense for zombie contact, bullet defense for armed threats, or climate values for travel and winter work.

02

Filter the slot

Compare pieces assigned to the same equip location so you are measuring realistic alternatives instead of unrelated layers.

03

Check the tradeoff

Review weight, insulation, run speed, combat speed, vision, hearing, and discomfort before choosing the highest defense value.

04

Find the item

Use the resolved loot and crafting connection counts, then open Loot Finder or Crafting for the exact source path.

Database note: protection and climate values are copied from the Build 42.20.4 item definitions. Runtime outfit totals still depend on layering, body coverage, item condition, holes, character state, and game calculations.

Source database FAQ

Common clothing and armor questions

How many clothing and protective items are in Project Zomboid Build 42.20.4?

The supplied Build 42.20.4 item snapshot contains 1,128 publishable clothing, accessory, and protective-gear definitions across 95 equip locations.

What do bite and scratch defense mean?

They are the per-item defense values encoded in the source definition. The protection your survivor receives also depends on body coverage, layers, condition, holes, and runtime game calculations.

Does more protection always make an outfit better?

No. Weight, insulation, overheating, run speed, combat speed, vision, hearing, discomfort, and coverage can make a lower-defense piece more practical for a particular job or season.

Why are some clothing stats listed as not set?

Not set means the item definition does not explicitly provide that property. It should not be read as a universal zero because runtime defaults and the clothing model may still apply.

Can I compare armor for the same body slot?

Yes. Filter the database by equip location, sort by the defense or climate value you care about, and use the side-by-side planner for two exact definitions.

Does the database include bullet defense?

Yes. It preserves bullet-defense values for the 101 source definitions that explicitly provide them, alongside bite and scratch defense.

How do I find where clothing spawns?

Select an item to see its resolved direct and procedural loot connection counts, then open the Loot Finder to inspect its exact distribution paths and pools.

Are clothing images included?

Yes. Every record resolves to an item image in the packaged archive, using 780 distinct source icon files across the 1,128 definitions.
