Interactive source formula
Trapping eligibility planner
Choose an animal, trap, bait, zone, and skill level to model the two independent source rolls used for that animal during an eligible hourly check.
Trap + bait roll
75% threshold
Zone roll
12% threshold
Two-roll eligibility estimate9.0%
This is the mathematical product of the two source roll thresholds for one animal candidate, using the Trapping level stored when the trap is placed. It is not a guaranteed final catch rate. Active hours, fresh bait, unloaded-world checks, competing eligible animals, and runtime behavior still apply.

How the hourly source check works
1. Trap score + bait score + 1.5 per Trapping level must pass a 0 to 99 roll.
2. Zone score + 1.5 per Trapping level must pass a separate 0 to 99 roll.
3. The animal must be active, the bait must still be fresh, and the trap must be eligible for its unloaded-world check.

Data note: Scores are source thresholds, not standalone drop percentages. The planner models the two explicit 0 to 99 checks, while the game still controls active time, bait freshness, world loading, eligible-animal competition, trap destruction, and final catch selection.
Field strategy
Build the trapping setup backward
A trap is only one part of the calculation. Pick the animal first, then use its source profile to choose compatible equipment, bait, terrain, and collection time.
Step 1
Choose the target animal
Start with the food or live animal you want. Each animal has its own trap, bait, zone, and active-time rules.
Step 2
Match a strong trap and bait
Trap and bait scores share the first source roll. A high bait score cannot make an incompatible trap work.
Step 3
Place it in the right zone
Zone score is checked separately. Forest animals favor wooded zones, while mice and rats score better around farms, trailers, and towns.
Step 4
Respect time and freshness
Rabbit, squirrel, and raccoon checks are active overnight. Every target also requires bait that still passes the freshness check.
What the scores mean
Two rolls, then runtime checks
Trap and bait threshold
The first roll adds the target's trap score, bait score, and 1.5 points for each Trapping level recorded when the trap is placed.
Zone threshold
The second roll adds the zone score and the same skill bonus. Both source checks must pass for that animal to become eligible.
Final eligibility
Correct hours, fresh bait, unloaded-world processing, and candidate selection still apply after the two score checks.
Common questions
Project Zomboid trapping FAQ
How many trapping animals are configured in Project Zomboid Build 42.20.4?
The supplied source defines six catch profiles: bird, rat, mouse, rabbit, squirrel, and raccoon.
What affects the trapping check?
The source uses one roll for trap score plus bait score plus 1.5 per Trapping level, then a second roll for zone score plus the same skill bonus. Both must pass alongside the time, freshness, and runtime checks.
What is the best bait for rabbits?
Carrots have the highest configured rabbit bait score at 45. Lettuce, bell pepper, and cabbage score 40, while several fruits and vegetables score 35.
When can rabbits and squirrels be trapped?
Both are active from 19:00 through 05:00 in the source definition. Raccoons use the same overnight window.
Which animals can be captured alive?
Rabbit, mouse, rat, and raccoon profiles have live-capture definitions. Bird and squirrel profiles do not.
Can every trap be crafted?
Five of the six configured traps have crafting recipes. The Mouse Trap has no fixed crafting recipe in the supplied data and must be acquired through the world or loot systems.
Why is the planner not labeled as a final catch chance?
It models the two explicit source-roll thresholds for one animal candidate. Active hours, bait freshness, unloaded-world processing, competing eligible animals, and runtime behavior still affect the final outcome.
Why does the raccoon profile show a Dead Rabbit result?
The Build 42.20.4 source currently points raccoon to Base.DeadRabbit and includes a developer placeholder comment. The database preserves that exact value instead of inventing an unavailable item.
