Stardew Valley Fishing Guide

Fishing starts after Willy sends you a letter on Spring 2. Visit the beach and he will give you your first fishing rod.

The fishing minigame is about keeping the fish inside the green bar until the catch meter fills. Tap or hold the button carefully instead of overcorrecting.

Fishing feels hardest at the start because your fishing bar is small. As your Fishing skill increases, the bar gets larger and the minigame becomes easier.

Many fish depend on season, weather, time, and location. Before selling rare catches, check whether they are needed for bundles, quests, recipes, or collections.

Where your bobber lands matters. Deeper water usually means less trash, better fish quality, better treasure chest rewards, and access to fish that may not appear in shallow zones.

Bubbles are worth casting into because they improve the fishing zone and make fish bite much faster. If you see bubbles nearby, they are usually worth targeting.

In Stardew Valley 1.6, Fish Frenzies can appear as an upgraded bubble event for one specific fish. They last the whole day, give a notification, and are worth visiting if you want fast catches or targeted fishing.

While casting, you can slightly adjust where the bobber lands by holding a direction. This helps reach bubbles, deeper water, or specific fishing spots.

Keeping the fish inside the bar for the entire catch gives a perfect catch, which can increase fish quality and Fishing XP.

The Training Rod is great for beginners. It makes the fishing bar easier to control and limits most catches to easier fish while you level up.

The Bamboo Pole is your first free rod from Willy. It works fine early, but it cannot use bait or tackle.

The Fiberglass Rod unlocks at Fishing Level 2 and lets you use bait. Bait makes fish bite faster, which improves your money and catches per day.

The Iridium Rod unlocks at Fishing Level 6 and lets you use both bait and tackle. This is the main rod you want for harder fish and late-game fishing.

Regular bait makes fish bite faster and slightly reduces trash. It can be crafted from Bug Meat or bought from Willy once bait is unlocked.

Magnet works like bait but also increases treasure chest chance. It is useful if you care about artifacts, geodes, gems, weapons, rings, or museum progress.

Wild Bait comes from Linus friendship progress. It reduces bite time more than regular bait and can sometimes catch two fish at once.

Magic Bait is a later-game option that lets you catch fish from that water type regardless of season, weather, or time, as long as the fish can appear in that location type.

Bait makes fish bite faster. It does not make the minigame easier, but it saves time and helps you catch more fish in one day.

The Trap Bobber is one of the best tackle choices for difficult fish because it slows how fast the catch meter drops when the fish leaves your bar.

The Cork Bobber increases the size of your fishing bar, making the minigame easier to control. It is useful if you want a more forgiving catch window.

Trout Soup from Willy is a cheap early Fishing buff that raises your Fishing level by 1. This slightly increases your fishing bar and can make early catches feel easier.

Dish o' The Sea is a useful mid-game Fishing buff that can help with harder catches before you have the strongest late-game food options.

Seafoam Pudding gives a much stronger Fishing boost and is excellent for Legendary Fish. Later, Qi Seasoning can make this buff even stronger.

Treasure chests can appear during the fishing minigame, but you still need to catch the fish to keep the chest. Do not throw the catch just to chase a chest.

Fishing treasure can contain artifacts, geodes, gems, weapons, rings, boots, resources, and other useful items. This makes fishing helpful for more than just money.

Magnet bait and treasure-focused professions can increase chest value or frequency. They are especially useful if you are trying to finish the museum.

A chest is only worth it if you can still catch the fish. If the fish is difficult or nearly escaping, prioritize the fish over the chest.

The Mountain Lake is one of the best early fishing spots. It is useful for money and important fish like Largemouth Bass, Carp, Bullhead, and Sturgeon.

The river has several Fish Tank bundle fish, including Sunfish, Catfish, Shad, Tiger Trout, Walleye, and Bream depending on season, weather, and time.

The beach/ocean has fish like Sardine, Tuna, Red Snapper, Tilapia, Eel, Pufferfish, Squid, and Night Market options later.

Some fish require special locations like the Mines, Secret Woods, Desert, Sewers, Ginger Island, Witch's Swamp, Pirate Cove, or specific map spots.

Fishing is one of the best early ways to make gold because it does not require seeds, sprinklers, animals, or machines. It is especially useful after watering crops.

If you fish a lot, the profession that increases fish sale price can make your catches more valuable. Some players wait to sell big stacks until after choosing it.

Rainy days are perfect for fishing because you do not need to water crops and some important fish only appear in rain.

For harder fish, bring food buffs, use the Iridium Rod, and equip helpful tackle like Trap Bobber or Cork Bobber.

Crab Pots catch items passively after being loaded with bait. They are useful if you want fishing-related items without playing the minigame all day.

Crab Pots can help with the Crab Pot Bundle, but you can also use beach forage and mine crab drops for some of the required items.

Crab Pots sometimes catch trash. This seems bad, but trash can be recycled later into useful materials with the Recycling Machine.

Place Crab Pots somewhere easy to check daily, add bait, collect the catch, and reload them as part of your normal routine.

Fish Ponds are farm buildings from Robin that let fish reproduce over time. You place a fish inside, then increase the population limit by giving requested items.

Most pond fish produce Roe, which can be processed into Aged Roe. More valuable fish usually produce more valuable Roe.

Sturgeon are useful because their Roe becomes Caviar. Lava Eel, Ice Pip, Blobfish, Stingray, and other special fish can also have valuable pond rewards.

In Stardew Valley 1.6, Golden Animal Crackers can be used on Fish Ponds to improve their rewards. This makes strong pond fish even better later.

Legendary Fish cannot be placed in Fish Ponds, so do not plan your pond setup around them.

Crab Pots can slowly raise your Fishing skill without playing the fishing minigame. They need bait, but they are useful if you dislike active fishing.

Fish Ponds can also give Fishing XP when you collect pond items or complete pond requests. This is slower than normal fishing, but it still helps.

If you befriend Linus, Wild Bait can help you use Crab Pots before relying heavily on normal bait crafting.

If you avoid fishing until Summer, Willy can give a free fishing lesson and a free Fishing level. It is a niche option, but useful for players who really struggle early.

Sturgeon are useful because their Roe becomes Caviar when processed. They are a strong Fish Pond choice and also matter for bundle progress.

Squid can be caught in Winter at the ocean after evening hours. Squid Ink is useful for some recipes and later goals.

Lava Eel and Ice Pip are special mine fish with valuable Roe and useful pond rewards. Lava Eel is especially strong for Fish Pond value.

During the Night Market in Winter, the submarine gives access to special deep-sea fish. Magic Bait can also help with unusual catch conditions later.

Legendary Fish are much easier with strong Fishing buffs. Seafoam Pudding is one of the best options, and Qi Seasoning can make it even stronger later.

Late-game players can use the Volcano Forge to try for a rod enchantment. The Master enchantment gives an extra Fishing level, which helps with difficult catches.

Cork Bobber increases the size of your fishing bar, while Trap Bobber slows catch progress loss. Both are strong choices for Legendary Fish.

Magic Bait lets you catch fish regardless of season, weather, or time if they can appear in that water type. This is useful when you want to catch Legendary Fish later with better gear.
