Stardew Valley Secret Notes Guide

A complete Secret Notes guide covering how to unlock notes, how to find and read them, villager gift notes, puzzle solutions, Mr. Qi secrets, hidden rewards, special powers, and late-game note hints.

What Are Secret Notes?

Secret Notes are hidden collectibles that reveal villager gift preferences, puzzle clues, special quests, hidden items, lore, and permanent rewards. Some notes are simple hints, while others unlock important secrets like Mr. Qi rewards, the Special Charm, and Bear’s Knowledge.

They start appearing after you obtain the Magnifying Glass during Winter Year 1. Once read, each note is saved permanently in your Collections menu so you can check the clue again later.

Best Simple Advice

Read every Secret Note as soon as you find it. Some rewards only work after the note has been read, and unread notes take up inventory space until used.

How to Unlock Secret Notes

Secret Notes start with the A Winter Mystery quest and the Magnifying Glass.

Winter Year 1 Unlock

Secret Notes unlock during your first Winter. Leave the farm through the bus stop exit near the shipping bin to trigger the A Winter Mystery cutscene.

Follow the Footprints

After the cutscene, follow the footprints in the snow to a bush near the playground area. Interact with the bush to recover the Magnifying Glass.

Magnifying Glass

The Magnifying Glass is added to your wallet and permanently unlocks the ability to find Secret Notes through normal gameplay.

Notes Are Spoiler Heavy

Secret Notes reveal villager gift hints, hidden items, puzzle solutions, Mr. Qi quests, special powers, and late-game secrets. Some notes are meant to be solved slowly.

How to Find Secret Notes

Once the Magnifying Glass is unlocked, Secret Notes can drop from many normal activities.

Normal Activities Drop Notes

After unlocking the Magnifying Glass, Secret Notes can drop from cutting trees, digging artifact spots, breaking rocks, fishing, and defeating monsters.

Artifact Spots Are Strong

Artifact spots are one of the better ways to find Secret Notes, but you will usually collect them naturally if you keep playing normally.

Skull Cavern Helps

Skull Cavern dives can be useful because you break many rocks and fight many enemies, giving more chances for notes to appear.

Do Not Rush Every Note

Finding every Secret Note usually happens over time. You do not need to force it unless you are trying to finish a specific reward or completion goal.

How to Read and Track Secret Notes

Secret Notes must be used from your inventory before they are saved in Collections.

Use the Note Like an Item

Secret Notes take up inventory space until read. Put the note in the top row of your inventory and use it like an item while your menu is closed.

Saved in Collections

After a Secret Note is read, it disappears from your inventory and is saved permanently in the Secret Notes tab of your Collections menu.

Some Rewards Require Reading

Certain secrets will not work until you have actually read the note. For example, some Mr. Qi and hidden-object interactions require the related note first.

Gift Knowledge Is Recorded

Gift hints from Secret Notes can update villager gift information in the relationship menu, helping you remember loved gifts later.

Secret Notes 1-9: Villager Gift Hints

The first group of Secret Notes helps teach loved gifts and villager personality details.

Notes 1-9: Villager Gift Hints

  • Secret Notes 1 through 9 mostly reveal loved gifts for villagers.
  • They include hints for characters like Abigail, Sebastian, Penny, Leah, Maru, Harvey, Elliott, Shane, Haley, Emily, Alex, and others.
  • These notes are useful if you want to build friendship without checking the wiki constantly.
  • After learning gift preferences, some loved gifts can appear in the relationship menu.
  • They pair well with your Villager Gifts page because they naturally teach players gift preferences.

Why Gift Notes Matter

  • Loved gifts are especially valuable on birthdays.
  • Secret Notes can help you plan better gifts before you memorize every villager.
  • Some notes give personality details, not just gift lists.
  • They make friendship progression feel more natural and discovery-based.
  • Keep these notes in mind when building gift chests.

Important Secret Note Rewards

These are some of the most useful Secret Notes because they unlock permanent rewards, quests, or valuable items.

Secret Note 10 unlocks the Mr. Qi meeting on Skull Cavern floor 100. Reaching it rewards Iridium Snake Milk, permanently increasing your health.

Note 25: Ornate Necklace

Secret Note 25 leads to the Ornate Necklace near the spa. It can be returned to Abigail or Caroline for different friendship rewards.

Puzzle and Hidden Item Notes

Some Secret Notes are map clues, arrow paths, timed events, or hidden-object puzzles.

Notes 13-15: Timed and Festival Secrets

  • Note 13 points to a bush that gives a Junimo Plush at 12:00 PM on the last day of any season.

  • Note 17 points near the river north of town and rewards a Strange Doll.
  • Note 18 points to the Calico Desert and rewards another Strange Doll.
  • Make sure you have inventory space before digging near water.
  • These notes are guaranteed ways to get certain treasures or museum items.

Notes 19-21: Arrow Path Secrets

  • Note 19 starts at Jodi’s house and leads to Mayor Lewis’s solid gold statue.
  • Placing the statue in town triggers a funny letter and a one-time gold reward.
  • Note 20 starts from the town square circle and leads to the truck driver for the Special Charm.
  • Note 21 reveals a secret bush event involving Marnie and Lewis at 12:40 AM.
  • Some arrow-path notes only need to be read once; you do not always need to follow the path afterward.

Secret Note 22: Club Card Quest

This Mr. Qi note starts a multi-step quest that eventually unlocks access to the Casino.

Secret Note 22: Mysterious Qi Quest

  • Place a Battery Pack in the tunnel box west of the bus stop.
  • Place a Rainbow Shell in the box at the train station.
  • Place 10 Beets inside Mayor Lewis’s fridge.
  • Give a Solar Essence to the dragon bones in Calico Desert.
  • Interact with the lumber pile at your farmhouse to receive the Club Card.

Why the Club Card Matters

  • The Club Card unlocks access to the Casino behind Sandy’s shop.
  • The Casino gives access to Mr. Qi and unique gambling-style minigames.
  • This quest is easy to miss if you do not understand Note 22.
  • You need several specific items, so save Battery Packs, Rainbow Shells, Beets, and Solar Essence.
  • Completionists will want this because it unlocks another wallet item.

Junimo Notes and Late-Game Secrets

Later notes include Junimo Hut secrets, raisins, and the Mastery Cave hint from Stardew Valley 1.6.

Note 24: Junimo Hut Colors

Secret Note 24 explains that placing gems or minerals inside Junimo Huts changes the color of the Junimos. A Prismatic Shard creates a prismatic effect.

Note 26: Raisins

Secret Note 26 explains that raisins increase Junimo productivity. Raisins are made by placing grapes in a dehydrator.

Note 27: Mastery Cave Hint

Secret Note 27 hints at the Mastery Cave in Cindersap Forest. It becomes available after reaching level 10 in all five skills.

Journal Scraps Are Separate

Journal Scraps appear in the same general collection area later, but they are more tied to Ginger Island and work differently from normal Secret Notes.

Common Secret Notes Mistakes

Avoiding these mistakes helps prevent missed rewards and confusing note interactions.

Not Reading the Note

Some Secret Note rewards only work after the note has been read. Finding the note is not always enough.

Letting Notes Fill Inventory

Secret Notes take inventory space until used. Read them as soon as possible so they move into your Collections tab.

Selling Important Quest Items

Items like Rabbit’s Foot, Maple Syrup, Battery Packs, Rainbow Shells, Beets, and Solar Essence can matter for note-related quests.

Ignoring the Collections Tab

Once read, Secret Notes are stored in Collections. You can reread them later instead of trying to remember every clue.

Trying Note 10 Too Early

Secret Note 10 involves Skull Cavern floor 100. Prepare with bombs, food, staircases, and a strong setup before attempting it.

Missing Time-Sensitive Notes

Some notes require specific times or dates, like the Junimo Plush at noon on the last day of a season or the Night Market Mermaid Show.

Forgetting Inventory Space

Some dig rewards can be lost or become annoying if your inventory is full, especially near water. Bring space before solving treasure notes.

Treating Every Note as a Quest

Some notes are lore, photos, or gift hints rather than direct quests. Not every Secret Note unlocks a major reward.

Best Overall Secret Notes Advice

Secret Notes are easiest when you treat them as long-term hidden progress instead of something you need to rush immediately. Unlock the Magnifying Glass in Winter, read every note as soon as you find it, check your Collections tab when you forget a clue, and save useful items like Rabbit’s Foot, Maple Syrup, Battery Packs, Rainbow Shells, Beets, and Solar Essence. Some notes are just lore or gift hints, but others unlock powerful rewards that are worth completing.
