Quick Freighter Tips

Start here if you just want the practical version.

Your first freighter can be free, so do not claim one you dislike unless you want utility immediately.

Accept the first freighter for early storage, frigate expeditions, and mobile base access.

Skip the first freighter if you want your free claim to be a larger capital freighter.

A-Class freighters are good enough for most players; S-Class is mostly for long-term perfection.

Freighter class cannot be upgraded after claiming, so check before accepting.

Before swapping freighters, empty valuable cargo and remove important technology.

Build a Fleet Command Room early so frigates can start leveling through expeditions.

Derelict freighters are one of the best long-term sources of freighter upgrades and Cargo Bulkheads.

Why Get One?

Why You Want a Freighter

A freighter is not just a big ship. It becomes your storage center, fleet command room, exploration scanner, and portable base.

Mobile Base

A freighter acts like a base you can bring with you. Build storage, refiners, trade terminals, farms, teleporters, and useful rooms in one place.

Storage Hub

Storage rooms and freighter inventory make item management much easier, especially when paired with the right freighter upgrades.

Planetary Scanner

The scanner room can instantly reveal information about every planet in the current system, which is huge for exploration and resource hunting.

Frigate Expeditions

Recruit frigates and send them on expeditions for units, resources, rare items, upgrades, and passive progression.

Starship Archive

A freighter gives collectors more flexibility by letting you manage active ships and archived ships from the fleet terminal.

Fleet Fantasy

Freighters, frigates, squadrons, and starships make your save feel like a real space fleet instead of just one ship.

How to Get Your First Free Freighter

The first freighter offer is one of the biggest early decisions in No Man's Sky.

Step 1

Play for several active in-game hours.

Step 2

Warp between systems multiple times.

Step 3

A freighter rescue battle can trigger.

Step 4

Defeat the attacking pirates.

Step 5

Board the freighter and go to the bridge.

Step 6

Speak to the captain.

Step 7

Claim the freighter for free or refuse it and take payment instead.

Important free claim warning

Do not automatically claim the first freighter just because it is free. Claim it if you want utility now. Skip it if you want to save the free claim for a larger or better-looking capital freighter later.

Accept the first freighter if...

  • You want storage and mobile base utility immediately.
  • You want to start hiring frigates early.
  • You do not care much about exterior design.
  • You are okay swapping to a better freighter later with units.

Skip the first freighter if...

  • You want your free claim to be a larger capital freighter.
  • You care about the look of your freighter.
  • You are willing to wait for later rescue battles.
  • You want to reroll for a better class or design before committing.

Types

System vs Capital Freighters

The exterior design is the main difference most players notice. Class, inventory upgrades, and the rooms you build matter more for actual utility.

System Freighters

Common freighters that appear in many systems. They come in several exterior designs and are easy to inspect, buy, or use as a first utility freighter.

  • Easy to find after the early game.
  • Good if you want function over appearance.
  • Can still be useful long-term if you like the design and class.

Capital Freighters

Larger exterior designs that appear through rescue battles. The main families players chase are Sentinel-style and Venator-style capital freighters.

  • Popular because they look massive and impressive.
  • Exterior size is mostly visual.
  • Class and upgrades matter more than size.

Pirate Dreadnoughts

Claimable pirate capital ships added through newer updates. They have a distinct look, unique bridge/hangar style, and can surrender during battle.

  • Commonly hunted in pirate/outlaw systems.
  • Can be claimed after forcing surrender.
  • You generally need to already own a freighter to trigger pirate dreadnought ownership routes.

Freighter Classes

Freighter class is permanent, so check before claiming.

C-Class

Common and functional, but not ideal for a long-term favorite because freighter class cannot be upgraded later.

B-Class

Better than C-Class, but usually still a temporary option unless you love the design and do not care about min-maxing.

A-Class

A strong practical target. Most players can do everything they need with an A-Class freighter.

S-Class

The best long-term class, but the grind can be painful. Chase it if you enjoy rerolling or want the best possible freighter.

S-Class Odds

S-Class is nice, but do not let the grind ruin the game.

1-star economy

Avoid for serious S-Class hunting.

2-star economy

Possible, but the odds are poor. Usually not worth the time.

3-star economy

Best regular-system target if you want a high-class freighter.

Pirate / outlaw systems

Strong target for pirate dreadnoughts and S-Class hunting, but results still depend on luck.

How to Hunt a Capital Freighter

This is the safer reroll method if you want a specific capital freighter design or class.

Step 1

Install an Economy Scanner and Conflict Scanner on your starship.

Step 2

Find the system/design you want to hunt.

Step 3

Before the battle warp, make a restore point in the previous system.

Step 4

Warp into the target system to trigger the rescue battle.

Step 5

Defeat the pirates without hitting the freighter you want to claim.

Step 6

Land inside and scan the freighter floor with the Analysis Visor to check class.

Step 7

If it is not the class you want, reload the restore point and repeat.

Do not shoot the freighter

If you are trying to claim the rescued capital freighter, be careful during the battle. Accidentally damaging the freighter itself can make it hostile and ruin that attempt.

Pirate Dreadnought Freighters

Pirate dreadnoughts are one of the coolest freighter options and can surrender after you disable them.

Step 1

Look for pirate-controlled or high-conflict systems.

Step 2

Warp until a pirate dreadnought battle appears.

Step 3

Destroy the engines first so the dreadnought cannot escape.

Step 4

Destroy the large anti-freighter cannons on top.

Step 5

When the dreadnought surrenders, board it.

Step 6

Speak to the captain and choose whether to claim the dreadnought or take tribute.

Beginner-friendly method

Destroy the engines first, then destroy the large cannons on top of the dreadnought. This is simpler than fully tearing through shield trenches and hull damage.

Claim or tribute

After surrender, you may be able to claim the dreadnought or take tribute. If you are farming rewards, tribute can be useful; if you want the ship, claim it.

Swapping Freighters Safely

This is the section to read before replacing a freighter you already own.

Remove important technology from your old freighter before the exchange.

Move valuable cargo out of the old freighter.

Do not assume all inventory transfers automatically.

Make sure you see the freighter base transfer prompt.

Consider leaving a few junk items in cargo if you are worried about the base-transfer prompt bug.

Once you accept the exchange, the game saves and the swap is final.

Bridge

Freighter Bridge Controls

Most major freighter systems are controlled from the bridge. Learn these terminals and the freighter becomes much easier to manage.

Freighter Warp Map

Warp your freighter between systems and use it as a long-range exploration platform.

Manage Fleet Terminal

Manage frigates, squadrons, and starship storage/archive options from your freighter bridge.

Navigator

Send frigates on expeditions and collect expedition results when they return.

Upgrade Control

Unlock freighter inventory, technology blueprints, construction modules, and exterior colors.

Rooms

Best Freighter Rooms to Build

A good freighter base should be useful first and decorative second. Start with utility rooms, then expand into farms, decoration, and larger layouts.

Fleet Command Rooms

Required to send frigates on expeditions. Build several so you can run multiple missions at once.

Storage Rooms

Core freighter utility. Keep resources, trade goods, upgrade materials, and crafting supplies organized.

Scanner Room

Instantly scans all planets in the system. One of the best exploration rooms in the game.

Teleporter

Turns your freighter into a travel hub when you do not have a planet base nearby.

Galactic Trade Terminal

Buy and sell items from your freighter instead of always visiting a space station.

Refiners and Farms

Freighters can support refining, crop growing, and efficient production layouts.

Exocraft Room

With the right setup, your freighter can help summon exocraft across systems it can reach.

Appearance Modifier

Convenient if you want your freighter to act as your main home base and customization hub.

Frigates and Fleet Expeditions

Frigates turn your freighter into a passive income and reward system.

Simple fleet target

A balanced beginner fleet is easier to manage than a hyper-focused one. Aim for a mix of Combat, Exploration, Industrial, Trade, and Support frigates. You do not need to chase only S-Class frigates early because frigates level through expeditions.

Combat

Best for combat expeditions and protecting fleets. Pirate frigates function as strong combat-style options.

Exploration

Best for exploration expeditions and discovery-focused rewards.

Industrial

Best for mining and industrial expeditions. Good source path for materials and some upgrade rewards.

Trade

Best for trade expeditions, units, and commerce-style rewards.

Support

Reduces fuel cost and is useful in almost every fleet, especially early when fuel is annoying.

Organic

Advanced frigates tied to Dream Aerial and Whalesong encounters. Useful for Living Ship upgrade rewards.

Expedition rules to remember

Build multiple Fleet Command Rooms.
The navigator offers several expeditions per day.
Send up to five frigates per expedition.
Match frigate strengths to the expedition type.
Aim for a fleet rating at least two stars above the expedition difficulty.
Recall and repair damaged frigates instead of letting them continue damaged.
Support frigates help reduce fuel costs.
A balanced fleet is better than stacking only one frigate type.

Damaged frigate warning

If a frigate is damaged during an expedition, recall it and repair it. Letting a damaged frigate continue can risk losing it permanently if it takes more damage.

Organic Frigates

Organic frigates are an advanced fleet goal, especially if you care about Living Ship upgrades.

The Dream Aerial blueprint can come from frigate expeditions.

Anomaly Detectors can help trigger organic frigate encounters.

While pulsing, wait for the Whalesong Detected message.

Only one organic frigate per expedition is needed to qualify for organic-style rewards.

Organic frigates can help with Psychonic Eggs and Spawning Sacs for Living Ships.

This is an advanced system, not something a brand-new player needs immediately.

Upgrades

Cargo Bulkheads, Salvaged Frigate Modules, and Freighter Upgrades

Freighter progression has a grind. Focus on the materials that unlock inventory, construction rooms, and better fleet expedition performance.

Cargo Bulkheads

Use: Expand freighter inventory slots.

Sources: Derelict freighter final rewards, freighter rescue rewards, crashed freighters, pirate/outlaw rewards, and some guild rewards.

Salvaged Frigate Modules

Use: Unlock freighter technologies and construction blueprints.

Sources: Frigate expeditions, derelict freighter containers, crashed freighters, freighter cargo pods, Nexus missions, and some guild rewards.

Freighter Upgrade Modules

Use: Improve freighter hyperdrive, fleet speed, combat, exploration, mining, trade, and fuel efficiency.

Sources: Derelict freighter engineering terminals and pirate dreadnought-related farming routes.

Best long-term farming loop

Run derelict freighters for Cargo Bulkheads, freighter upgrade modules, loot containers, tainted metal, and possible Salvaged Frigate Modules. At the same time, send frigate expeditions whenever possible so your fleet levels passively.

Beginner Freighter Mistakes

Freighters are powerful, but a few mistakes can cost time, cargo, or a free claim.

Claiming a freighter you dislike

Your first freighter can be free. If you care about appearance or class, do not rush the claim.

Thinking size means power

Exterior size is mostly visual. A smaller freighter can still be excellent if the class and upgrades are good.

Forgetting class cannot be upgraded

Unlike starships, freighter class is locked. Check before you accept.

Swapping without clearing inventory

Move important cargo and technology before exchanging freighters.

Not building Fleet Command Rooms

Frigate expeditions are one of the best reasons to own a freighter. Build command rooms early.

Sending underpowered expeditions

If your fleet rating is too low, frigates can be damaged or even lost if ignored.
