Combat Guide for New Players
Quick Combat Tips
The most important combat rules before the full guide.
Combat is split into ground fights, Sentinel fights, and ship dogfights.
If a Sentinel is only investigating, stop what triggered it and wait before it becomes a fight.
When fighting Sentinels, kill healer or support drones first.
Use S-Class upgrades for your main weapon and place matching upgrades together.
Use supercharged slots for your main damage tech when possible.
For ship combat, slow down or hold brake to help track targeted enemy ships.
Carry Sodium or Shield Batteries so you can recharge shields quickly.
Do not panic-launch into space while wanted unless you are ready for Sentinel Interceptors.
Combat basics
Ground Combat vs Space Combat
No Man's Sky combat is easier to learn when you separate it into the situations you are actually dealing with.
Ground Combat
Multi-tool fights
Use multi-tool weapons to fight Sentinels, aggressive fauna, Biological Horrors, and Derelict Freighter enemies.
Sentinel Survival
Avoid, escape, or disable
Sentinel encounters are not always about fighting. Sometimes the best play is to hide, wait, or shut down the planet's Sentinel forces.
Space Combat
Starship dogfights
Use ship weapons, shield upgrades, recharge supplies, and brake tracking to make pirate and Sentinel ship fights easier.
Ground weapons
Best Beginner Multi-Tool Weapons
You do not need every weapon installed. Pick one main weapon, upgrade it, and learn how it feels.
Neutron Cannon
Best general recommendation
Strong damage with area value. Great once upgraded and especially useful when fighting groups or clearing dangerous interiors.
Pulse Spitter
Beginner-friendly range
A rapid-fire weapon that feels easy to use and gives more range than close-range shotgun-style options.
Scatter Blaster
Close-range burst
A shotgun-style weapon that hits hard up close. Great if you are comfortable fighting near the target.
Boltcaster
Simple and reliable
Straightforward and familiar. Not always the flashiest option, but easy to understand and upgrade.
Sentinel Combat Basics
Not every Sentinel encounter needs to become a full fight.
Investigation vs Wanted Level
If a Sentinel is only investigating, stop mining, harvesting, or doing whatever triggered it. On normal planets, waiting is often enough to avoid combat. Once you become wanted, Sentinels will keep searching until you hide long enough, escape, or disable them.
Do not panic-launch into space
Taking off while wanted can move the problem into space and trigger Sentinel Interceptors. Launch only if you are ready to dock quickly, summon the Space Anomaly, or fight in your ship.
Sentinel fight priority
Priority 1
Healer or repair drones
Priority 2
Summoner / support units
Priority 3
Small drones
Priority 4
Quads and heavier units
Priority 5
Walkers or final wave threats
Escape
How to Avoid or Lose Sentinels
If you are not prepared for a fight, breaking line of sight is usually the safest play.
Stand down
If the Sentinel is only investigating, stop mining or harvesting and wait. On normal planets, this often prevents combat.
Hide in a building
Buildings can break line of sight. Even basic cover may be enough for Sentinels to start searching and eventually stand down.
Hide in a cave
Caves can work, but Sentinels may follow if they still have line of sight. Go deep enough to break vision.
Dig a tunnel
Use the Terrain Manipulator to dig downward, then turn the tunnel so Sentinels cannot look straight in and see you.
Teleport away
If you are near a teleporter, leaving the area can reset the encounter and avoid a longer fight.
Dock somewhere safe
In space, docking at the Space Anomaly, a space station, or your freighter can help end the chase.
Upgrades
Multi-Tool Upgrade Placement
A simple weapon with good upgrades can outperform a stronger weapon with messy placement.
Pick one main weapon
Do not spread early upgrades across every weapon. Choose one main tool weapon and make it strong.
Use matching upgrades
Install upgrades for the weapon you actually use, then place them next to matching tech for adjacency bonuses.
Use supercharged slots
Put your most important weapon or upgrade modules on supercharged slots when the layout supports it.
Upgrade survivability
Combat is not only damage. Shields, hazard protection, movement, and recharge supplies all help.
Combat tools
Best Combat Multi-Tools
For serious ground combat, your multi-tool type matters too. These are the best directions to aim for.
Shutdown
How to Disable Sentinels
On normal planets, you can either fight through the waves or shut them down through a Sentinel Pillar.
Method 1: Clear 5 waves
- 1Trigger Sentinel combat on a normal planet.
- 2Defeat each wave as it escalates.
- 3Prioritize healers and support units first.
- 4Defeat the Walker or final wave threat.
- 5Sentinels are disabled on that planet for the session.
- 6The Sentinel Pillar location can be revealed after the final wave.
Method 2: Sentinel Pillar
- 1Locate a Sentinel Pillar.
- 2Destroy the three generators around the pillar.
- 3Expect nearby Sentinels to become hostile.
- 4Interact with the terminal.
- 5Choose the shutdown option.
- 6Loot the drops and check for a possible Royal multi-tool.
Sentinel Pillars are also worth checking because they can provide lore and may offer a Royal multi-tool. This connects directly to multi-tool hunting if you want a stronger or better-looking tool.
Sentinel Pillars and Boundary Maps
Boundary Maps are a useful way to find Sentinel Pillars.
Destroy Sentinels to get Salvaged Glass.
Analyze Salvaged Glass for a chance at useful rewards.
Sentinel Boundary Maps can locate a Sentinel Pillar.
Boundary Maps are helpful if you want to disable Sentinels without clearing all waves first.
Dissonant Planet Warning
Corrupted Sentinel planets do not behave exactly like normal Sentinel planets.
Dissonant planets use corrupted Sentinels and behave differently from normal planets.
Clearing corrupted Sentinel waves can reveal a Sentinel Interceptor location instead of simply disabling all Sentinels.
If you only want to escape on a Dissonant planet, breaking line of sight and hiding is often the safer beginner option.
Use extra caution before farming Dissonant resources if your gear is weak.
Space combat
Beginner Dogfighting Loop
Most new players lose ship fights because they fly too fast, overshoot targets, and forget to recharge shields.
- 1Identify the enemy direction marker.
- 2Slow down or hold the brake button to help track the target.
- 3Use your main guns to weaken or remove shields.
- 4Use rockets or burst damage when shields are down.
- 5Recharge shields from the quick menu if needed.
- 6Speed up and reset distance if the enemy becomes hard to track.
- 7Re-enter the slow tracking pattern and finish the fight.
The brake / slow-down trick is one of the simplest ways to make space combat easier. Holding the brake helps your ship track the targeted enemy so you can stop spinning past targets and start landing shots consistently.
Ship setup
Best Ship Types and Space Combat Basics
A good combat ship setup is simple: one strong main weapon, shield upgrades, and recharge supplies.
Best ship types
Fighters and Sentinel Interceptors are easy combat recommendations because they have strong damage and handling.
Shield upgrades
S-Class shield upgrades make dogfights much more forgiving, especially before you master tracking.
Recharge supplies
Carry Sodium, Shield Batteries, or other recharge supplies before starting difficult fights.
Supercharged damage
Use supercharged slots for your main ship weapon if the layout supports it.
Ship weapons
Best Ship Weapons for Beginners
Infra-Knife is the easiest general recommendation, while Positron and rockets reward a closer or more combo-heavy style.
Infra-Knife Accelerator
Best general pick
Fast fire, strong damage, and easier range than close-range options. A very easy ship weapon to recommend.
Positron Ejector
Close-range burst
Very powerful at close range, but it asks you to fly aggressively and stay near the target.
Rocket Launcher
Burst combo
Good after shields are down. Pair with a main weapon for burst damage instead of relying on it alone.
Phase Beam
Shield leech utility
Not always the fastest kill weapon, but useful for survival because it can help recover shields with the right tech.
If you struggle to survive dogfights, consider using the Phase Beam as a shield-leech tool. It may not be the fastest kill option, but it can help keep your shields alive while you learn ship combat.
Capital ships
Sentinel Capital Ship Strategy
Capital ship fights are easier when you stop chasing everything and focus on lowering incoming damage first.
Do not panic-chase every small Interceptor if the capital ship is your goal.
Stay on one side of the Sentinel capital ship.
Strafe back and forth instead of flying straight through everything.
Destroy turrets first to lower incoming damage.
Keep shield recharge supplies ready before committing.
Finish the capital ship after the dangerous turrets are down.
Common Combat Mistakes
Avoid these and combat becomes much less frustrating.
Flying away while wanted
Launching into space can turn ground Sentinel trouble into a Sentinel Interceptor chase.
Ignoring healer drones
Support enemies can undo your damage. Kill healers before focusing heavier targets.
Using too many weak weapons
One upgraded weapon usually performs better than several poorly upgraded ones.
Forgetting shield supplies
Sodium and Shield Batteries can save a fight when your shields drop.
Fighting on Aggressive Sentinel planets too early
Avoid these early unless a mission requires it or you are ready to hide, tunnel, or disable Sentinels.
Not using the brake in dogfights
Slow down to help your ship track enemies instead of constantly overshooting the target.
