Learn how to find, repair, fuel, protect, and drive vehicles in DayZ. Vehicles give you fast travel, mobile storage, and a major survival advantage once you get them running.
Vehicle Overview
Vehicles usually spawn damaged or incomplete, so getting one running means finding the right parts, adding fuel, filling the radiator when needed, and keeping it protected from other survivors.
Find a Spawn
Vehicles spawn around the map at set locations, often near towns, roads, industrial areas, and military zones. Use map tools to check possible spawn points.
Repair Missing Parts
Most vehicles are missing important components like wheels, batteries, spark plugs, glow plugs, or radiators.
Protect It
Working vehicles are valuable and often stolen. Lock parts, hide the vehicle, and store it inside a base when possible.
How to Find Vehicles
Vehicle spawns are not guaranteed. A marked spawn location only means the vehicle can appear there, not that it will always be available.
ADA 4x4
Compact off-road vehicle. Good for rough terrain and smaller groups.
Olga 24
Larger civilian car with strong storage potential.
Gunter 2
Fast civilian car, but road conditions and server performance matter.
Sarka 120
Small civilian car that can be useful once repaired.
M3S Truck
Large truck with heavy storage value and unique battery needs.
M1025 Humvee
Military offroad vehicle with automatic transmission.
Use iZurvive for Spawn Locations
A map tool like iZurvive is useful for checking possible vehicle spawns. Just remember that other players may have already taken, hidden, stripped, or destroyed the vehicle.
Usable Car vs Wreck
- • Most cars you find are wrecks and cannot be repaired or driven.
- • A usable vehicle usually lets you inspect the condition of panels and parts.
- • Wrecked cars often have a burnt-out engine bay or no visible part condition.
- • If a wheel is lying on its side under the car, it is usually part of the wreck model.
Other Vehicles
Rubber Boats can also be found near coastal areas and are useful for water travel, coastal movement, and reaching certain locations more safely.
Essential Parts to Get Running
Most vehicles share similar requirements, but the M1025 Humvee and M3S Truck have special part requirements.
| Vehicle Type | Required / Useful Parts |
|---|---|
Most Cars |

M1025 Humvee |

M3S Truck |

Important Part Exceptions
Do not assume every vehicle needs the same parts. The M1025 uses a Glow Plug instead of a Spark Plug, and the M3S Truck uses a Truck Battery instead of a regular Car Battery.
Where to Find Vehicle Parts
- • Check garages, sheds, industrial buildings, and small garden sheds.
- • Shelves inside sheds and garages can spawn useful parts like spark plugs.
- • You may need to search multiple towns before finding every part.
- • Keep an eye out for containers that can hold water or fuel during repairs.
Fuel & Radiator Water
A vehicle can have all the right parts installed and still be useless if it has no fuel or the radiator runs dry.
Finding Fuel
Gas canisters can be found around industrial areas, garages, sheds, trains, and similar loot spots.
Refilling Fuel
Gas canisters can be refilled at gas stations. Keep extra fuel if you plan on driving long distances.
Radiator Water
Vehicles with radiators need water. If the radiator is dry or leaking, the vehicle can overheat and become damaged.
Filling the Radiator
After installing a radiator, fill it with water before driving. You can use water bottles, cooking pots, canteens, or a jerry can filled with water.
- • Around 6 water bottles can fill a radiator.
- • Around 3 cooking pots can fill a radiator.
- • A jerry can filled with water is usually the easiest option.
Fuel Cap Location
The fuel cap is usually toward the rear side of the vehicle, commonly on the right-hand side, but the exact spot can vary depending on the vehicle model.
Basic Driving Controls
Most DayZ land vehicles use manual transmission, so learning how to shift properly is important. The M1025 Humvee uses automatic transmission.
| Action | PC Keybind |
|---|---|
| Accelerate | W |
| Brake / Reverse | S |
| Steer | A / D |
| Shift Down | Q |
| Shift Up | E |
| Handbrake | Space |
Console Shifting
- • PlayStation: X / Circle
- • Xbox: A / B
Driving Tip
Drive carefully on laggy servers, rough terrain, bridges, and tight turns. Vehicles are powerful, but crashes can quickly ruin parts or destroy the car.
Repair & Maintenance
Maintaining your vehicle reduces breakdown risk and helps prevent part failure while traveling.
Wheels
Repair damaged wheels using a Tire Repair Kit.
Engine
Repair engine damage with a Blowtorch that has gas.
Battery
Repair damaged batteries using an Electrical Repair Kit.
Radiator
Replace damaged radiators. Leaking radiators drain water quickly.
Spark Plug / Glow Plug
These cannot be repaired. If ruined, they must be replaced.
Body Parts
Doors, hood, and trunk can be repaired with a Blowtorch or Epoxy Putty.
Start Failure
If the spark plug or glow plug is ruined, the vehicle will not start. Replace the ruined part before troubleshooting anything else.
Installing Parts
Stand near the correct physical part location, usually the engine bay, when installing parts like the battery, radiator, spark plug, or glow plug. Parts can sometimes be placed directly onto the vehicle or moved through the vehicle inventory.
Bumpers Matter
Bumpers help absorb crash damage and protect the vehicle frame and engine from impact.
Engine Warning Signs
Learn the early signs of vehicle problems before your car becomes unusable.
| Warning | Likely Problem |
|---|---|
| Check engine light | Engine damage |
| Steam from hood | Radiator leaking or overheating |
| Temperature gauge near red | Radiator likely needs more water |
| Vehicle overheating | Low radiator water or damaged radiator |
Protecting Your Vehicle
Vehicles are one of the most valuable things you can own in DayZ. If you leave one unsecured, another player can strip it or steal it.
| Vehicle Part | Tool Used to Lock |
|---|---|
| Doors, Hood, Trunk | Wrench |
| Battery, Radiator, Spark Plug, Glow Plug | Screwdriver |
| Wheels | Tire Iron |
Storage Tip
Locked parts are harder to remove, but hiding the vehicle or storing it inside a base is still one of the best ways to reduce theft risk.
Vehicle Storage & Persistence
Vehicles are useful for more than travel. They can act as mobile storage, loot transport, and group movement tools.
Mobile Storage
Vehicles can carry loot, base supplies, tools, and extra parts.
Base Parking
Storing vehicles inside bases greatly reduces theft risk.
Server Bound
Vehicles do not transfer between servers.
Persistence
Vehicles persist until destroyed, abandoned, or removed by server behavior.
