First expedition field guide

Subnautica 2
Beginner Guide

Follow a safe first-hour route, craft the tools that matter, unlock early Biomods, and establish a useful first base without spoiling the discoveries ahead.

Recommended start

Your first hour, in order

The goal is not to clear every signal. Build a repeatable loop where each dive improves your oxygen, mobility, knowledge, or shelter.
01
0–10 min

Stabilize at the Lifepod

Check the pod storage, learn the Fabricator, collect nearby Titanium, Copper, Quartz, and Water Slugs, and keep every first dive shallow.

02
10–20 min

Craft your survival kit

Prioritize a Scanner, Survival Multitool, Basic Battery, Air Bladder, and Basic Flippers before carrying materials farther from oxygen.

03
20–30 min

Scan the shallows

Scan unfamiliar tools, technology, creatures, and useful structures. Blueprint progress is more valuable than filling every inventory slot.

04
30–40 min

Visit the Welcome Center

Travel southeast with a charged battery, scan both Habitat Builder fragments, restore the Biolab, and review your first Biomod choices.

05
40–50 min

Solve oxygen and storage

Gather Silver for the Standard Air Tank, use a Portable Locker for overflow, and return to the Lifepod before starting another objective.

06
50–60 min

Place a compact first base

Build close to the Lifepod and early resources, add dependable power and oxygen, then organize only the storage and fabrication you need now.

A successful first hour ends with a stable loop. You should have dependable water, essential tools, more oxygen, base-building access, and a safe place to organize the next expedition.

Stay alive first

Control the three survival pressures

Oxygen ends dives fastest, but food, water, and avoidable damage determine how often you can leave shelter prepared.
Highest priority

Oxygen

Turn back before the warning becomes an emergency. Air Bladders provide a fast ascent, while the Standard Air Tank is the first major comfort upgrade.

Build a reserve

Food and water

Use the Lifepod supplies carefully, collect Water Slugs for drinking water, and resolve Digestive Incompatibility before relying on local fish for food.

Avoid, then recover

Health and escape

Subnautica rewards awareness more than fighting. Keep a clear return line, carry recovery supplies, and disengage when unfamiliar fauna becomes territorial.

Do not plan around the final oxygen warning. Caves, currents, creatures, and unfamiliar geometry can all make the return take longer than the descent.

Fabrication priorities

Craft these tools before chasing distance

Each item either reveals progression, protects oxygen, or shortens the repeated trips that define the opening hours.
01
Unlock technology and record lifeforms

Scanner

Make this first. Scan duplicate fragments until a blueprint completes, then keep scanning new creatures and structures for research progress.

02
Cut, salvage, repair access, and discourage fauna

Survival Multitool

Treat it as a utility tool first. In 1.1, most creatures flee briefly when struck, giving you space to escape rather than an invitation to fight.

03
Emergency ascent and reserve oxygen

Air Bladder

Keep one in a hotbar slot. Two are useful before your air-tank upgrades make longer dives more forgiving.

04
Faster gathering and safer returns

Basic Flippers

Movement speed saves oxygen on every trip and makes it easier to create distance from hazards.

05
Extend useful dive time

Standard Air Tank

Silver is the early bottleneck. Search the caves north of the Lifepod and around the Old Habitat route once you can travel safely.

06
Start a powered, breathable base

Habitat Builder

Scan both fragments at the Welcome Center, then craft the tool after you have enough Titanium, Quartz, Copper, and battery materials.

Gathering priorities

Resources worth bringing home

Gather for the next project instead of filling every slot. Common materials become clutter when they prevent you from carrying a rare fragment or Silver.
Tools and base structure

Titanium

Collect steadily; early construction consumes it quickly.

Scanner, glass, and base parts

Quartz

Cloudy crystals in the opening shallows are worth marking mentally.

Batteries and wiring

Copper

Keep a small reserve instead of turning every piece into a battery immediately.

Basic Battery ingredient

Acidic Raion Pouch

Gather only what you need and leave room for metals and fragments.

Fiber-based equipment

Fibrous Pulp

Useful for early survival gear and later fabrication chains.

Air tank and electronics

Silver

Your first meaningful gathering target after the basic toolkit is stable.

First major destination

Bring a battery to the Welcome Center

The Welcome Center lies southeast of the Lifepod and connects three important opening systems: Habitat Builder progress, the Biolab, and the first meaningful route away from the shallows.
  1. 01Arrive with a working Scanner and a Basic Battery.
  2. 02Scan the Habitat Builder in the crate near the entrance.
  3. 03Find and scan the second Builder below the structure.
  4. 04Restore the Biolab and choose adaptations for your next objective.
Early Access 1.1Biomod progression expanded

Adaptive Measures added Biolabs in Coral Gardens and Axum Ruins, increased Biolab unlocks to six, and tied extra passive slots to creature Bioscans.

Habitat setup

Build a small base that improves every dive

Your first habitat is a workshop, oxygen stop, and storage point. It does not need to be your permanent home.
Daylight power Organized storage Expansion ready

Starter habitat checklist

  • Build close enough to use the Lifepod as backup oxygen, storage, and fabrication.
  • Leave open water beneath or beside the base for future vehicle access and expansion.
  • Start with a corridor and hatch; large rooms can wait until their blueprints are unlocked.
  • Place Solar Panels where they receive daylight and watch reduced output at night.
  • Add a Fabricator and labelled storage before spending materials on decoration.
  • Consider a nearby natural current for a future Hydroelectric Turbine connection.
Simple location adviceNear the Lifepod is the safest first choice. If possible, leave room near a natural current so a Hydroelectric Turbine can become a later power upgrade.

Crew coordination

Make co-op reduce work, not duplicate it

Up to four players can explore together. The opening goes faster when everyone shares one objective and returns resources to a clear staging area.

Scout

Follow the current objective, call out landmarks, and return with fragment locations.

Research

Carry the Scanner, finish blueprint sets, and communicate which fragments are complete.

Gather

Collect the materials tied to the crew’s next tool, oxygen upgrade, or base module.

Build

Keep shared storage legible and spend materials only after the group agrees on priorities.

Every player should still carry personal oxygen tools, food, water, and a clear return route.

Avoidable failures

Common beginner mistakes

Most bad opening sessions come from stacking several small risks until there is no safe way home.
01

Starting a deep task with half an oxygen bar

02

Leaving the Scanner behind to gain one inventory slot

03

Hoarding common materials while ignoring blueprint fragments

04

Following several signals in one trip without a return plan

05

Building a large base before solving power and storage

06

Using all Copper or Silver without keeping an electronics reserve

07

Treating aggressive wildlife as something you need to defeat

08

Splitting a co-op crew without shared landmarks or a rally point

Expedition ready

What should you do next?

Once the base is powered and your oxygen loop feels comfortable, prepare better mobility, deeper equipment, Biomod research, and the Tadpole.
