How to defeat the Ender Dragon in Minecraft!

A beginner-friendly video guide covering how to prepare for the Ender Dragon fight, enter the End, destroy crystals, and survive the battle.

Watch this first if you prefer a visual overview, then use the written guide below as a preparation checklist before entering the End.

How to Reach the Ender Dragon

The Ender Dragon is not found in the Overworld. You need to progress through the Nether, craft Eyes of Ender, locate a stronghold, and activate the End Portal before the fight begins.

Step 1

Get Blaze Powder

Travel to the Nether, find a Nether Fortress, defeat Blazes, and turn Blaze Rods into Blaze Powder.

Step 2

Collect Ender Pearls

Get Ender Pearls from Endermen, villager trades, Piglin bartering, or other loot sources depending on your world.

Step 3

Craft Eyes of Ender

Combine Blaze Powder with Ender Pearls to make Eyes of Ender. Bring extras because some can break while locating the stronghold.

Step 4

Find the Stronghold

Throw Eyes of Ender and follow the direction they travel. When they start dropping downward, dig carefully to find the stronghold.

Step 5

Activate the End Portal

Find the portal room, clear the Silverfish spawner if needed, then place Eyes of Ender into the empty portal frames.

Recommended Dragon Fight Gear

You do not need perfect gear, but the dragon fight becomes much easier when you bring protection, food, ranged damage, blocks, and a way to survive knockback or fall damage.

Protection on armor pieces
Feather Falling on boots
Unbreaking and Mending if available
Pumpkin helmet optional for Endermen safety

Weapons

Plenty of arrows

Spare Eyes of Ender before entering

Beginner tip

Feather Falling boots, Slow Falling potions, and a water bucket are some of the best safety tools for a first dragon fight because the dragon can knock you high into the air.

Finding the Stronghold and End Portal

Throw Eyes of Ender and follow the direction they travel. Keep repeating this until they start falling toward the ground. That usually means the stronghold is below you.

Once inside, search for the portal room. It usually has lava, stairs, a Silverfish spawner, and an inactive End Portal frame.

Bring Extra Eyes of Ender

Eyes of Ender can break after being thrown. Bring more than the exact number you think you need so you do not get stuck before reaching the portal.

Dig Safely

When the Eyes start dropping downward, dig carefully. Do not mine straight down unless you are using a safe two-block method.

Mark Your Path

Strongholds can feel maze-like. Use torches, blocks, or signs to mark explored paths and avoid walking in circles.

Clear the Portal Room

The portal room may contain Silverfish and lava. Secure the room before placing the final Eyes of Ender.

Ender Dragon Fight Plan

The fight is easier when you think of it in phases: stay alive, destroy the End Crystals, avoid Endermen, then damage the dragon during flight and perch windows.

Set Spawn Near the Portal

Before entering the End, place a bed near the stronghold portal room or nearby safe base. If you die, you want a short run back.

Destroy End Crystals First

End Crystals heal the dragon. Shoot exposed crystals with a bow and carefully handle caged crystals by climbing or breaking iron bars.

Avoid Looking at Endermen

Endermen are often more dangerous than the dragon if you accidentally anger several at once. Look down or wear a carved pumpkin if needed.

Use Water for Safety

A water bucket can stop fall damage, push Endermen away, and give you a safer place to stand if Endermen become aggressive.

Attack During Perches

When the dragon lands at the center portal, move in and attack with your sword. Back away before it launches or knocks you into the air.

Keep Moving

Do not stand still for too long. Dragon breath, knockback, Endermen, and fall damage can quickly stack into a death.

How to Deal With End Crystals

End Crystals are the main reason the dragon can stay alive for so long. Destroy them first so the dragon stops healing, but be careful because crystals explode when broken.

Shoot Exposed Crystals

Most crystals can be destroyed safely with arrows from the ground. Stay aware of the dragon while aiming.

Handle Caged Crystals Carefully

Some crystals are protected by iron bars. Build up, break the bars, back away, and destroy the crystal from a safer angle.

Do Not Stand Too Close

End Crystals explode when destroyed. If you break one at close range, it can deal heavy damage or knock you off a pillar.

Use Slow Falling

Slow Falling potions make pillar climbing and dragon knockback much safer, especially for first-time dragon fights.

How to Avoid Endermen During the Fight

The End island is full of Endermen. The dragon is the boss, but Endermen can easily ruin the fight if you accidentally look at them and get swarmed.

Look down: Avoid aiming your crosshair at Endermen’s faces while moving around the island.

Use water: Endermen avoid water, so a water bucket can create a safer zone if they become aggressive.

Pumpkin option: A carved pumpkin prevents Endermen from getting angry when you look at them, but it limits visibility.

Safe First-Fight Approach

  • • Enter with full health and hunger.
  • • Drink Slow Falling before risky pillar climbs.
  • • Destroy crystals before focusing the dragon.
  • • Use a bow for flying dragon damage.
  • • Use a sword when the dragon perches.
  • • Keep water ready for Endermen and fall recovery.
  • • Retreat and heal instead of forcing damage.

Common Ender Dragon Mistakes

Entering the End without setting a nearby spawn point.
Forgetting to bring enough food.
Looking directly at Endermen during the fight.
Standing too close to an exploding End Crystal.
Getting knocked into the air without Slow Falling or a water bucket.
Running out of arrows before the crystals are destroyed.
Bridging carelessly and falling into the void.
Not bringing enough blocks for pillaring, bridging, or emergency cover.
Using beds without understanding that beds explode in the End.
Trying to fight the dragon before destroying the healing crystals.

What to Do After Beating the Dragon

Beating the Ender Dragon finishes Minecraft’s main survival goal, but it also unlocks some of the best late-game progression, including End Cities, shulker boxes, and Elytra.

Collect the XP

The first dragon kill gives a large amount of XP. This is useful for enchanting, repairing gear, and upgrading tools.

Return Home

The center portal takes you back to the Overworld and triggers the credits if it is your first time beating the game.

Collect the Dragon Egg

The dragon egg is a trophy item. It teleports when clicked, so use a torch or piston method if you want to collect it.

Explore Outer End Islands

After the fight, End gateways let you reach outer islands where you can find End Cities, shulkers, loot, and Elytra.
